🔍 What I’m looking for at the World Wide Technology Championship
Tiger Woods designed El Cardonal at Diamante in 2014, and it’s a traditional resort-style course on the Pacific coast of Mexico, and it will play as a Par 72 stretched to 7,452 yards this week.
El Cardonal is one of the most forgiving layouts on the PGA Tour, and Ben Griffin went -29 to win here last year. The track is characterized by oversized fairways, massive flat greens, and zero traditional rough.
Additionally, the entire property uses Paspalum turf, which slows the greens to 10-11 on the Stimpmeter and creates highly receptive landing areas.
Because of the massive fairways and unpenal rough, El Cardonal is a second-shot course, where strong long-iron play is rewarded.
This will also be just the fourth time this event will be played here, and there isn’t ShotLink data available, so I’m placing added emphasis on players who make birdies in bunches, with a favorable weather forecast for scoring.
Key stats
- Birdie-or-better percentage, Adjusted scoring average
- True strokes gained tee-to-green, True strokes gained approach
- Par-5 scoring average
- Bogey avoidance
🏆 World Wide Technology Championship picks to win
Best bet to win: Ben Griffin
The defending champion finished T4 last week in the VidantaWorld Mexico Open despite losing true strokes off the tee.
Driving won’t be a hindrance for Ben Griffin at El Cardonal, and he’s positioned to improve on his 21.15% birdie-or-better percentage after posting a 38th-ranked 23.56% mark in 2025 to finish fourth in adjusted scoring average.
- Course fit: 2025 win supported by two more top-25 finishes at El Cardonal
- Recent form: Smooth T4 last week without his best tee game
- Key stat: 27th on PGA Tour in bogey avoidance
Outright pick: Chris Kirk
There’s been a fall surge from Chris Kirk, and he ranks fourth in this field in true strokes gained tee-to-green while carding a T10-T21-T6 run across his past three events.
I’m particularly encouraged that he gained +1.35 true strokes putting on slower greens in the Bermuda Championship, too.
- Course fit: Elite approach play will position Kirk to score
- Recent form: High-end ball-striking during T10-T21-T6 run
- Key stat: 25th on PGA Tour in birdie-or-better percentage
💣 World Wide Technology Championship long-shot picks
Best long-shot pick: Zach Bauchou
A missed cut last week provides extra time for Zach Bauchou to hit the reset button to go low at El Cardonal.
After all, Bauchou ranks 12th in birdie-or-better percentage and 23rd in bogey avoidance this season, which positions him to contend on this favorable layout.
- Course fit: Excellent tee-to-green form suits this track perfectly
- Recent form: Four straight top-25 finishes before a missed cut last week
- Key stat: 12th on PGA Tour in birdie-or-better percentage
Long-shot pick: Matthieu Pavon
Matthieu Pavon has a PGA Tour and a DP World Tour win on his resume, and he paced the field in true strokes gained on approach while ranking second in true strokes gained tee-to-green during his T11 last week in the VidantaWorld Mexico Open.
He also popped with a T3 in the FedEx Open de France to round out September.
- Course fit: Returning after a respectable T31 here in 2025
- Recent form: Ball-striking spiked last week in Mexico
- Key stat: Ninth in true strokes gained approach over past four events
