Couple thoughts

I heard that people's shoes have been melting on the pavement out there in the desert. 

My only concern is my landscaping, it’s tired and is begging for a break. We seem to be cooling off this week, looks like 6-7 days with no triple digits. 

I’ve looked at this Boston game pretty much all day, and I keep coming back to the same thing. Gray’s numbers against Toronto this year don’t look great at first glance, but when you dig into them, one bad inning did a lot of the damage. Overall, I’m comfortable with Gray.

For me it really comes down to Boston against Taillon. When you look under the hood, his numbers are ugly, and Boston has enough left-handed and switch hitting bats in that lineup to give him problems.

Gray doesn’t have to be perfect. Give us five solid innings, and I think Boston can scratch out enough runs against Taillon to be ahead after five. That’s really why I like the first five here.

The biggest red flag is the quality of contact. Taillon is allowing a .352 wOBA with a .357 xwOBA, so the expected numbers say the damage has been real, not just bad luck. His 14.3% barrel rate is especially ugly, and that is exactly the kind of thing you worry about against a Boston lineup with left-handed power and enough patience to sit on mistakes

His average exit velocity allowed is 88.5 mph and his hard-hit rate is 38.4%. Those are not catastrophic by themselves, but with that barrel rate, they tell you hitters are getting too many damaging balls in the air

Jimmy, for this handicap I’m not asking Boston to explode for six runs in the first five. I’m asking them to scratch across one, maybe two, while Gray keeps Toronto quiet.

That’s it. I don’t need Boston to suddenly get red hot. I just need them to be ahead after five against a very hittable pitcher who’s already carrying a high pitch count. That’s where my head is at on this one.
