just because you overpay players doesn't mean you are a good team. They have signed shit in recent years and on huge money - carl pavano, jon lieber, jeff weaver, jared wright, kevin brown, jose contreas, etc. Plus they play in a division where the Red Sox spend just as much.
Baseball wages are widly inefficient. Check out oaklands payroll in the years 1999-2006 and how many games they won.
