One good thing ...if Jerome H. Powell gets confirmed,, as the chair the Federal Reserve and is given the keys of the printing press .. ..because he is a fmr. investment banker,, not an economist ..we won't need anyone to translate "Fed Speak" into plain English like with previous Chairs.....

So him being an ex-Carlisle insider is a good thing and heaven forbid we have to try to understand what an economist is saying..

    Really?

Again I ask- who would you have selected?- you gave a very ambivalent endorsement to Fisher- so....

Again- there are not likely a large number of folks qualified to chair the Fed- or, perhaps in your opinion there are thousands of folks out there that would make the cut...

It's your thread- it certainly seems as though you'd have an alternative selection in mind-

Well I guess if that is your only way of knowing if I like or dislike someone, no I did not make a thread about Yellen that I recall but I've been critical of the FED since 2007 or so when the discussion comes up..but for sure you wont find one of me being fond of Yellen.

Qualified is a pretty void term to use in this case because Trump has no idea what the FED chair does outside of give corporations and the government cheap money. Maybe he does know who runs the show, and maybe he does not care because his self interests are first and foremost so what does it matter?

And yeah if you Trump folk continue to ignore his track record of his mouth issuance vs execution I think it does mean you were conned and hoodwinked...either that or not smart enough to know he was a fraud from the start.

I know why you guys look the other way, your personal agenda is being served in areas you find important so who the hell cares if Trump is a phony or not...which he is of course but as long as the agenda goes forward the guy can run the country into the ground and screw the lower/middle class and you could care less.

If I have to choose between giving freebies to corps and the wealthy vs the lowest and middle class (because in reality the money is going to the special interest and corps one way or the other) I choose programs that MOST serve the lesser vs the direct cashiers check to schmucks like the Koch brothers.

So, no real answer as to how many people would be qualified- just more Trump bashing...

And yeah if you Trump folk continue to ignore his track record of his mouth issuance vs execution I think it does mean you were conned and hoodwinked...either that or not smart enough to know he was a fraud from the start.

So now double down and bash those who voted for him...

But if the decisions he makes serve my personal agenda, and is the reason I voted for him, wouldn't that make him (in my view) the opposite of a phony?

Right- so, that's a difference of opinion, not some representation that Trump is a fraud or a phony- it seems to me that what you describe is exactly how he campaigned (tax cuts for individuals, decreasing corporate tax rates, lowering repatriation rates)- so, in fact, he was quite sincere- you just don't like it..

If I have to choose between giving freebies to corps and the wealthy vs the lowest and middle class (because in reality the money is going to the special interest and corps one way or the other) I choose programs that MOST serve the lesser vs the direct cashiers check to schmucks like the Koch brothers.

-I am not responsible for making the decision but if I were I for SURE would look outside the belt and make the best decision, not just pick a current or past multi millionaire gov like Trump did. I would probably look at someone in a different area than if they had experience taking orders from the FED...which there are many likely as or more capable than Powell. I would be curious as to who OUTSIDE the den he actually interviewed and seriously considered...well not him as I doubt he did much of the work of course. The issue for the what 5th time is that he campaigned and stated the exact opposite of what he ended up doing. THAT is the issue.

-Double down...well how about restate since this is a repeating issue...double down like 20 times, so properly state the point...a 40 bagger not just a double down.

-Yeah I think you know I take fault with people who vote for their personal agenda...that is selfish and destructive. I do not vote for a candidate that I think does the things the way I want, how I want because I live in a society with millions of people who are not ME and do not share my views...I try and vote for what I think serves the needs of those with less than me (there are not too many of those) and what serves the freedoms of the majority under the current constitution and laws. I live my life inside my home how I want, I think what I want and practice what I want (also inside the law of course) and I do not make decisions for the majority based on my narrow selfish needs only.

-You combined several statements in the last comment when it had nothing to do with my remarks. I think Trump is a fraud and a phony well before he was ever seeking office, but it did not take very long listening to his trap that I knew he was conning the lesser thinkers...people who are not going to really think if Trump has a history or moral backbone to do what he stated..he never was going to do it. I know politicians lie but the difference is the joke was not a politician, he was allegedly some outsider looking to make a difference yet what has he done relative to the number of claims? I'd rather he stick to his infantile twitter bashing of anyone who crushes his little ego than make a ton of hollow promises. Trump has not cut taxes for the majority, he has not lowered any tax rate for the majority...repatriation does not equal taxation and if he allows corps a free cash holiday that is the exact opposite of what he should do. If corps want to hide the cash then they should still pay the due taxes on what monies are not hidden and should be forced to pay import duties as if they were a foreign corporation....you know the same way we do for actual corps doing business from other countries and shipping products here.

Hopefully the DNC will consult with you to help with their "message"- it's precisely why Trump will win in 2020.

A tax plan is on the table- hopefully to be passed in the near future- which will cover most of the things listed.  As for repatriation, under your plan, the $ just stays offshore as it is at present.

Replacing Yellen is a bad decision because she has done such a good job.  US economy has done well in recovering from recession.  Unemployment and inflation are contained while GDP growth is solid.

Risky in choosing someone to lead the most important monetary policy making body in the world.  When bad policies are potentially devastating, the safest course of action is the best one.  Continuity matters. For decades, that is why most Presidents often kept the same head of federal reserve regardless of political stripe.

Read what I said about repatriation, if a corp holds money offshore that deserves to be taxed, then they will be taxed in TOTAL as a foreign corporation..

So much like we tarriff other countries imports, if a corp holds cash offshore then they are treated as a foreign corp on all their products period.

If you give an out a corp is going to take it...if you treat them like you treat other corps who hold their money out of the country, then there is no incentive for the corp to offshore their cash.

So what is better for the majority, to eliminate the estate tax and reduce the upper tax brackets or make healthcare free for families earning under the poverty level?

I did not start a thread to bash his decision, I started a thread because of his hypocrisy. He campaigned on a foundation of which he has done little to nothing to keep. Not even a year ago he openly bashed Yellen yet he replaced her with someone as or more dovish than she...

Yeah the banks dont need oversight, they can take care of themselves and never harm the consumer or the economy with their reckless greed.

Sort of silly and a lot of palaver.  Just go look at the available candidates and pick one that you would prefer.  Not that complicated. Many in depth articles online about them.  Nothing at all wrong with saying you prefer Yellen.  She is a well-respected liberal and even some conservatives give her some credit for stability.  Trump actually considered her along with the others. But obviously he will be able to put his stamp on the board with 5 or so. So why not start with chairman position?  Also, he has stated he has felt a non-economist would be his preference. It is not as if he is picking some fellow off of the street to set policy.  He is picking a well-respected guy that has expressed a lot of respect for Yellen and possible continuing with her plan.
But it is a very, very reasonable question to ask who Trump should've chosen that would not have been 'hypocritical'.

    Raiders,

So you missed the attack Trump made on Yellen and the FED during the campaign and his remarks in the past blasting the FED and the artificial low rates?

So when you attack the FED for doing something, yet promote someone even more likely to continue what you were bashing, what do you call that?

I call it hypocrisy...what do you call it? If you were so against something that you attack the party in question, me thinks you can spend whatever time necessary to find someone to fill the position that supports what you were campaigning on even if that means *gasp* going outside the institution in question.

    Wow....

WSC.  I get that part.  But it was still probably his best compromising candidate. Don't you think?  He now has opportunity to replace Yellen.  He now has a chance to put in a non-economist.  He now has a guy that is respected, generally, by most parties ---except maybe, jealous eceonmists. He can start putting his stamp on the Fed.  While, at the same time appeasing folks that like a lot of the Yellian-type policies --- with maybe a little tweaking to his own satisfaction.  Because he considered them all.  Plus Yellen obviously has the option to stay on stay involved for like 20 some years, I think it is.
So, I really don't think it is as hypocritical as you may initially think. He decided not to go with the person he railed against   He opted for a sort of outsider, with a lot of credit.  While still maintaining, potentially, the course.  Which most of us that study, and keep up with, this sort of thing largely agree with.
Plus, if things go sideways, or even have a slight setback --- who do you think is going to get the blame?  Things cannot continue as well as they have forever.
So, that is why I think it is a fair question to ask --- if not his candidate, then who?  Which other one of the 4/5 would have been a better candidate to choose? And also why?

It would be more hypocritical to leave Yellen in maybe?  Had to switch.  And I think he chose the most compromising candidate without risking too big of a change is all. Always enlightening to hear other sound reasoning.  I understand the folks that don't like Trump are going to simply disagree with anything he does; just as the folks that didn't like Obama didn't like Yellen, at first.

    Raiders,

He is not an outsider...he is a multi-millionaire from the disgusting slimeball Carlisle group who is also a FED governor-

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerome_Powell

This guy is as far from an outsider as Yellen was. I know wiki generalizes but I dont see anything at all regarding this clown that even sniffs what the loud mouth implied while campaigning.

    Hypocrisy...

Yeah. Never said he was an outsider. But I'm not clear on what 'outsider' would actually mean.  The 5 folks he narrowed it down to all have their good points.  Not sure by outsider if you mean, maybe a college business head? Or what?  I mean, again, you can't just pick anyone.  The person has to have the experience and knowledge.
Could actually care less if the guy is a multimillionaire.  I know you don't seem to like those type folks or CEOs, etc.   But do you really think a person that has not been as financially successful as this guy would be better?  If so, why?  I would prefer someone that has been successful. That to me is at lest somewhat of an indicator of success and knowledge.
Most of the governors and other candidates have been successful in their own right.
But if by 'outsider' you mean a non-economist --- then he fits the bill somewhat well.

Well I never expected the next choice to be an outsider, there was never a high likelihood for someone outside of the FED..

But the point of the thread was that Trump attacked the current FED chair and the artificial low rates, and that insiders of all kinds were going to be out...that was the foundation of his entire election platform.

When you attack as he did and have the opportunity to follow through with even a small piece of your platform then you actually make that decision and not be a hypocrite.

I also do not think the requirements to be successful need someone that is an insider, wealthy or not an economist. The quandry that the FED put the economy in is quite serious and keeping the same course for sure is not what Trump supported and campaigned against.

    Any who- to your points...

I will side with my President in his choice- I feel no need to find an alternate, as I'm not the one criticizing his choice...

I was not bashing the Fed- (at all)...

    Tell me again ...
    Who was your choice?

Yes.  There was never a LOW likelihood of anyone outside of FED.  So it would mean what you think outsider meant is all. A non-economist would seem to be a fair compromise. Get someone that is not strictly and economist, but knows what to do. But also get one even democrats should be okay with.
What would you rather see?  Just some businessman that was not a millionaire?  I guess I'm just not sure what you are suggesting Trump should have done exactly?  He sort of had to do something --- as you said he was not entirely happy with Yellen.

My view does not matter too much since I was not running for president on the platform Trump was, I have been critical of the FED many many times but I am not a politician who made the claims he did/does.

My issue isnt who he picked rather that he constantly abuses and lies and does not follow through with his loud mouth. If he feels it necessary to abuse and intimidate then the onus is pretty big on him to do SOME of what he yaps about..if not he is a hypocrite period...I already thought he was anyway and this isnt the first nor the last time he will do it...

But as a citizen when do we hold this guy accountable for the abuses and claims when he does not act any different himself?

Its easy to call shots and attack others from the sidelines, easy to say what you would do when you are not in the seat, and Trump has done this for decades...he is a joke, a hypocritical joke.

As for what I would do, we are stuck the FED is stuck no question, so do we want to be Japan and be stuck for 20 years with zero growth and an aging population continually buying government paper and worse or should we look to reverse this and give chance to the future to unwind this and have options when something bad happens in the future?
