It's the difference between using soft power and hard power. Hard power is just a show. It's impossible to convince someone with hard power alone! A teacher could beat their students every day and get them to shut up that way (but they would never respect them - and they would cheer the day they died) + it would be much more effective if they made their students like them. Then, the use of force wouldn't be necessary all the time (if it at all) ! The path you've taken, where your power in the world is exclusively military, is a slippery slope because you have to keep enforcing that power for it to be relevant.

You cannot tariff global demand to subsidize domestic supply, that is doing the EXACT thing you are not wanting and that many complain about China. They subsidize and support their industries and they are still considered communist. This economy is a global capitalist form which means we do not close borders or tariff outside supply because that is anti capitalism and forces inflation and inferior goods onto the domestic consumer. The US has not been a mass textile producer in multiple decades because it requires massive capital investment for low margin products and a below market wage base and even with that the product is not superior so why would the US be in this business in the first place?
