And it sets up a likely general election matchup between Platner and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), a five-term incumbent with a formidable electoral track record who Democrats are nonetheless hopeful they can knock off amid backlash to Republicans and President Donald Trump.
“While I have the drive and passion, commitment and experience, and above all else — the fight — to continue on, I very simply do not have the one thing that political campaigns unfortunately require today: the financial resources,” Mills said in a statement Thursday morning

She's 78 & maybe she knows the shit she goes through as Governor will be worse going into the cesspool that is Congress. (props to kc for the use of "cesspool")
Realistically, it's time for her to enjoy the rest of her life & start thinking about herself & her family rather than her constituents.
But then again, I'm of the frame of mind that anyone 75+ has gotta go.

I was surprised as well by her decision.

Totally agree with everything you said
I dont care if a person is in great shape, at 75 its time to step down and let somebody younger take over.
Like storm thurmond in the senate at age 100. Thats just flat out wrong. I saw him on tv many times just sleeping thru whole senate meetings. You also gotta put alot of blame on the voters, they shouldnt have been voting for him every 6 years as an automatic thing
Honestly i dont care how much a person might love their job as a politician, at 75 it really is time to start thinking about yourself and your own family before its too late.
Politicians are all drunk with power and just cant stand to give it up.

It will be interesting to see if the Mainers actually rally behind Platner with his baggage.
It was surprising to see some of the outside big name Democrats that supported him over Mills knowing of all of this. It would seem they would support a female that was widely liked in the state over a male that supports and says some of the things he has.
Maybe it was an age thing. Even though this could be construed as ageist, which is another thing Democrats seem to be against. But some people age at slower rates than others and are very quick mentally. Everything I had read seemed to indicate that she was fine.
So, it will be something to watch and see how the rest of the folks in Maine decide to go.
