Of the 3,534,000 million (rounded) children who were the subject of an investigation or alternative response in fiscal year 2018, 678,000 (rounded) children were determined to be victims of maltreatment, up from 674,000 (rounded) victims in 2017. In total, 60.8 percent of victims were neglected, 10.7 percent were physically abused and 7.0 percent were sexually abused. More than 15 percent were victims of two or more maltreatment types.
“This report again demonstrates that most children enter the foster care system, not from physical abuse, but from neglect,” said Milner. “All too often, we know that neglect is closely tied to poverty and therefore requires us to pinpoint our focus on strengthening communities to meet the basic needs of families to increase their capacity to care for their children in safe and loving homes. Addressing poverty and other root causes of neglect before they rise to the level of requiring a maltreatment report will help to prevent much of the trauma and disruption that children and families experience when difficulties go unresolved and lead to more intensive interventions.”

A national estimate of 1,770 children died from abuse and neglect in fiscal year 2018 compared to an estimated 1,710 children who died in fiscal year 2017.

I know there are reasons why he is but Senator Leahy should not be Senate President Pro Tem of these proceedings. His age is showing badly, his garbled speech is barely understandable & it's time to pass the torch to a younger leader IMO.

Eugene Goodman was given the congressional gold star. It the highest award given by Congress to a civilian for bravery.
