According to wikipedia, US studies show immigration has no significant effect on crime rates.  Some research shows increase in immigration is associated with lower crime rate.

the general fact that any “illegal” immigrant has already committed a crime just by entering the country and/or staying illegally makes me feel like that can only ADD to our crime rate

House Speaker Mike Johnson formally invited President Biden on Saturday to address the joint session of Congress on March 7, 2024, to deliver the State of the Union.

For President Biden, it will be an opportunity to lay out his administration's numerous accomplishments over the last three years, as well as a chance to share a vision for what still needs to be done, despite stiff republican opposition to everything, including border security measures.

A State of the Union address is officially a government event, not a political one, but previous presidents running for reelection have used it to comfort and persuade the American people.

    High-profile Republicans head for the exits                            amid House GOP dysfunction

House Republicans are shocked by some of the
recent high-profile retirements announced by
their colleagues, which have included powerful
committee chairs and rising stars inside the GOP.

But given the miserable state of affairs inside the
House right now, they also weren’t exactly surprised.

“We’ve signed up to do serious things. And we’re
not doing serious things,” said Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado.

Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, who represents
a key swing seat, pointed to his party’s struggle
to govern as driving the departures.
“When you’re divided in your own conference,
the joy of the job is harder,” Bacon told CNN.
“When you have folks on your own team
with their knives out, it makes it less enjoyable.”

National Review writer and hardcore conservative Dan McLaughlin is frustrated at the poor state of his party.

Writing on X Monday evening, he reflected that the GOP is seeing a dire brain drain in Congress — and former President Donald Trump and his loyalists, like Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), are a big part of the reason why.

"Trump & Gaetz have made serving in Congress as a Republican something responsible, capable people don't want to do," wrote McLaughlin.

"In the meantime, Democrats profit!" he added glumly.

This comes amid a huge surge in retirements on the Republican congressional side that has swept up a number of longtime party leaders and committee chairs.

Among those who have recently announced their intention to leave are Reps. Ken Buck (R-CO) and Mike Gallagher (R-WI), two longtime conservatives who expressed frustration and skepticism towards GOP impeachment efforts against President Joe Biden and his cabinet officials, and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), who previously chaired the House Republican Conference.
