Now that Assad has used chemicals to attack innocent civilians in Syria, what should the US do, if anything?

TYPING A RESPONSE IN ALL CAPS IS NOT NECESSARY.
Blaming Trump, Obama, Clinton, is useless.
Talking about Russian hacking, or US Intelligence spying is fruitless.
    Talking about yesterday is pointless.

I am fully aware that if Trump does act, the MSM will vilify him.
If Trump does nothing, the MSM will vilify him.
Warranted or not, that's just the way it is.

My question is simple enough, what should President Trump do, if anything, as it relates to Syria?

Doing anything unilaterally would be ill-advised. He would be best served by trusting our Intelligence Community and preparing several courses of action moving forward. He needs more than just one viable plan to consider.

While that is happening, he should use his negotiating skills to try to curb the violence. It's a tough negotiation but that is his strength.

Lastly, Rex Tillerson is probably not the man for the job of SOS. A legitimate foreign policy heavyweight would be helpful in these times I guess. Rice/Powell/Baker etc.

I believe if I'm to go by his responses on Twitter in the past, we shouldn't do anything because the U.S. has bigger things to care about.  If you're going to tell me that he suddenly changed his mind because he cares about the innocent civilians (which I know he doesn't), then he should really consult Congress about appropriate actions.  Acting unilaterally like Inyourlife suggested and without even consulting the intelligence community would be foolish.

Q, I will try it one more time just for you ...

My question is simple enough, what should President Trump do, if anything, as it relates to Syria?

Please try to write an answer sans the attacks/insults

Wally, I don't always agree with your opinions, but I almost always feel they are well reasoned.

    Do you have an opinion?

What should Trump do about this?

Of course I have an opinion, you know me well but I dont rush to give it for the most part.

My first thought when I read the thread was covert...anything done should be covert and it should look like an inside job not that we had any part of the action.

My second and likely better thought is, what happens if the guy chokes on dinner and dies naturally, what happens then?

Is there a solution waiting to be developed that is any better for them and for our country?

I am not sure there is a good solution for that region and that religious demographic that helps them and the rest of the world.

So the better question is to ask what solution there is outside Assad and not just react like we did in Iraq.

Iraq was a stupid rash and erroneous decision which was orchestrated as we all know, the results have been terrible for this country and theirs...what would be different if he was removed?

We must make an example with north Korea Syria Isis and south Sudan. Cooperate with the international community. Or be not.... Hard line stance from Washington will signal to our allies that we are here to stay and to displine when the need arises. But Assad's regime and his city Damascus does not to utilize the rest of the world needs.

    I agree with this.
I do not believe there is a viable solution to the Syrian conflict.

If Assad was removed, we, as a country, would be clueless as to what would happen thereafter. As you mentioned, it could just be another Iraq.

My initial instinct was to do nothing, but I can't get the picture out of my head of the Syrian man holding his dead 4 year old twin children in his arms with tears rolling down his cheeks.

    So what should Trump do?

Regardless of which agencies he relies on for intel, any action/inaction will fall squarely on the shoulders of Trump.
Congress can be unified in lock step, and the intelligence community can overwhelmingly support what is done/not done.
It will still all be on Trump.

    So what should Trump do?

Does anyone have an opinion on whether he should use military force in Syria?

Nature1970 is the only one on record as stating a strong stance.
He would like us to nuke the region.
But my question was posed to the Trump detractors.

You been sucking up a lot lately. "Ooooh Wally, I respect your opinion soooo much!"  Worried about something?

Of course Trump can't do anything in Syria. Russia won't stand for any meddling in that region, they have a dangerous psychopath for president too, except this one isn't stupid and way out of his depth. And then we run straight away into Russia's involvement with US domestic politics in the last year.
Trump will again make an azz out of himself with China this week.
Nature's "opinion" is a fine illustration of what went wrong with your country.
President Pence will have to re evaluate and start from scratch.

Current politics, especially with regards to foreign governments and war, speculation..all of this reminds me of the Showtime series Homeland.

I've watched it every season and it is one of my favorite shows, and so much of what goes on in that series is remarkably similar to how our political system functions.

You have the different branches of government not working together, the CIA and FBI seem to be their own government and do covert ops without anyone knowing and sometimes are counter to what the POTUS seems to want, and nobody seems able to control the CIA or military and if someone tries then there is either some personal dirt that comes out or an attempt on the politicians life.

This Syria situation reminds me of several Homeland themes over the years...

Trump does not need to inform anyone what he is doing. Simple

TYPING A RESPONSE IN ALL CAPS IS NOT NECESSARY.
Blaming Trump, Obama, Clinton, is useless.
Talking about Russian hacking, or US Intelligence spying is fruitless.
    Talking about yesterday is pointless.

Warranted or not, that's just the way it is.

My question is simple enough, what should President Trump do, if anything, as it relates to Syria?

There have been well over 150 chemical attacks in syria since 2011.

Trump will have to work with the international community to resolve this issue. It will involve an international coallition troops peacekeepers, the chances the islamic state just up and leaves are slim and none.

Pressure from the international community sanctions and so on. After the iraq debacle many nations would be leery of following the usa blindly into a drawn out conflict. Some of the nations that took a pass on iraq would certainly assist in this "intervention.

A question for the Trump detractors ...

How could there be any chemical weapons in Syria int he first place to use on people?   In 2014 the Obama administration bragged repeatedly about getting all the chemical weapons out of Syria.......

At the time President Obama bragged :“It turns out we are getting chemical weapons out of Syria without initiating a strike,”

Former Secretary of State John Kerry said in a television interview that in Syria, “We struck a deal where we got 100 percent of the chemical weapons out.".........100%...means none left.

Looks like President Trump was right by saying  .."These heinous actions by the Bashar al-Assad regime are a consequence of the past administration's weakness and irresolution,"
