Played this hand bad, but got away with it

just got back from the poker room.

 

Was playing 5/10/20 N/L (yes, that's 3 blinds)

 

Well, there were 5 callers.  I had AA on the button and I make it 100.  BB calls(I popped this guy 2 hands earlier so maybe he's on tilt).  I goes back to this other guy, and he makes it 500 total(he now has 500 left).  I sit there and think about it.  If I move in, the cat's out of the bag.  But if I smooth call, I must be certain that the BB would fold.  I smooth call but to my suprise, so does the BB. 

 

Flop is QQ5.  BB checks, other guy moves in for 500.  I call.  BB thinks for a while(which makes me feel uneasy) and then fold.

 

turn is Q and river is some stupid card.  Guy turns over AK.

 

I should've move in preflop and take it down, but I got away this time. 

yes very surprising you smooth called that .... you had the best hand and won.

 

BUT

 

I learned that if I am going to take someone's $ with AA then its all in preflop if not Ill be happy with the reraise $ ..... 500 isn't chump change.

 

not the most conservative way to play, but you did make an extra 400 from the bb's call.

idk about that...never slowplaying aces or kings?

 If you thought he was on tilt then you should have made him put in his last 500.

I think Colonel you had the right thought process I just think the extra caller fucked up the situation....

I think A-K is a hand that is way overplayed and overvalued at all levels of games, esp the high limits and no limit. It is a nice hand to start with but if you don't hit anything on the flop or turn, WTF are you gonna do? In this case the hand is worthless as the guy is only gonna get called by a hand that can beat him. A-K is not an all in hand in a tourney unless you are shortstacked. In cash games, if you have 2 raisers in front of you can you call? 2 or more of your "outs" may be gone, you may be seriously dominated. I prefer to limp in with this hand or raise when in position, as if you don't flop anything then it's easy to throw away. 8-9 suited, if you don't flop anything, that's easy to throw away.
