As much as he comes off as a cocky prick, when you listen to him talk about hands he's played or a match he's commentating I don't think there is anyone else who you can learn more from to better your game.

No question andarmac99 he is one of the greatest. 11 bracelets in hold em, you must be kidding me. The other players like to needle him because he does have a huge ego, is a self promoter AND is hugely successful and wealthy. Some of the cheap shots have an edge to them when people needle him.  I remember last year the prop bet off shore was like 19-1 will phil win a bracelet and he did it. That is very sick. He lays a hand down in tourneys better then anyone. He plays his hand and style so well it is sick how he rarely seems to change gears, doesn't seem to read other players as well as a kenny tran type. Yet 11 titles, so sick.  He is not even one of my 20 favorite players but you can not argue he is a beast.

If he ever makes a run at the World Series of Poker again,  it will be one of the greatest things ever.     Would love to see him with a stack of about 2 million chips and see what happens.   
 
 
Unfortunately, he gets knocked out early every year.

He's become more of a shit show lately like at the Main Event last year, crashing the brat car or whatever the hell he calls it and then making a grand entrance at the tournament with his entourage a full 2 hours late. These commercials and promotions and stuff are crap I just want to see him sit down (and not on ESPN because they only show big hands) and watch the guy play poker because he is damn good and you can pick up so much.

Poker After Dark is pretty boring but if he's on and you want to improve your game it is definitely worth watching, especially the director's cut when he explains how and why he played most of the hands he did during the week and the reasoning behind each play. It is top notch stuff

dog I agree about the laydowns. Even better than his bets and wins are the plays he lays down. In some situations where 99.9% of players would get trapped or make a bad call he makes a sick read and lays it down. He may have AQ and the other guy may have A5 and the flop comes A K 10 rainbow. The other guy bets, Phil calls and the turn is a 5 and Phil almost knows right away that his opponent had a A weak kicker and hit his kicker so instead of getting himself in trouble he lays it down. It's just sick.

So true, makes it even more amazing he plays so well.  Negraneau has to be the best ever at reading other players.

But overall a very cool guy....I have played with him twice, once before the "poker boom" and once after....he did seem to be a little more "full of himself" the 2nd time I was at a table with him....but overall he was very nice and calm....of course It was not a TV table (damn that would have been cool )
 
but most of his "poker brat" personality if for the cameras anyway

Bad Beats Lucky Draws is his best book.  I learned alot from reading this book; great insight into the world of big stakes poker. Let me tell you who is the best ever in laying hands down when its necessary Doyle Bronson.  I love all the Harrington Books on Tournaments.  My favorite gambling book is Chris Moneymakers; unbelievable story and very open account about his life besides the world of gambling.

for doyle the experience he has is unbelievable, been playing 50 some years and he knows what is going on every hand. Amazng to watch

I would be willing to bet that in the last 7 years I have probably played 10x the amount of hands Doyle has played in his lifetime...
 
probably more.....10x seems low....
 
 
online poker is a great thing lol
 
 
not taking anything away from Doyle it's just crazy to think that with online poker anyone with any skill can gain decades of experience in a only a couple of years playing online

weathered, you are right, but the difference in online and live games is huge. He has probably played in much bigger $$ games for longer than most online players. And you can pick up on tells in live games moreso than online games, the tells and patterns are different. Online you have betting patterns and such, which you have in live games too, but live games you get to see and feel the situation too. For these reasons I would say a top player like Negreanu or Doyle would wax an online player in a big live cash game.

Helmuth is as good a tournament player and maybe the best tournament NL hold em player there is.  In cash games he is usually easy money.  Cash games are a different animal.  The guys who do well in the big money cash games have little regard for the money itself.  Most guys playing high limit are very wealthy guys from something other then poker or guys who hit a big tournament, and the big pro's who got to that game by getting backers.  Most of the big name guys you see are financially backed.  I would place a large bet that Hellmuth has made more money off the table then he has on and he is as successful a tournament guy there is.  The great cash players all tend to go bust but the nice thing for them is its usually someone elses cash.  With the poker boom these guys have been able to make income outside of playing which is a huge benefit.  What gets a lot of these guys is the fact that they are gamblers.  Phil is not.  he wont go blow a nights work on the crap table as many of these guys do.

I am not going to give you my poker resume because quite frankly nobody cares.  I also did not discover texas hold em when espn started showing it 11 hrs a day.  You are entitled to your opinion on Helmuth in a cash game but the fact is he is not a gambler and in the big money cash games he does not fare well.  As a matter of fact he does not play in any big money cash games unless its on tv.  For the record I do not watch poker on tv at all, but I am aware he was on the high stakes nl show.  Don'tt know how he faired there I just know he was on it at least once.

Phil Hellmuth is NOT a good cash game player.....this has nothing to do with High Stakes Poker on tv.....it has been a well known fact for many years in the poker community that players like Hellmuth, TJ Cloutier, Men the Master, Scotty Nguyen, ect. flat out suck at cash games while being considered some of the best tournament players in the world....2 very different things

oh for sure....but I started playing live first in 1997 when I turned 21 then moved to playing online in 2001....

since I already had been playing live for 4 years before playing online it was a great advantage for me as i could get many hands in playing online but still have the tools to play live....

thats the trick some of the newer online players dont understand....you need to log the hours in a cardroom at lower levels to learn the live game before jumping into the higher limit lives games.....you will get crushed no matter how good you are or how high a limit you play online.....

todd brunson has said that he owns Hellmuth in cash games. I can't see a guy like Hellmuth playing too many cash games though as he doesn't live in Vegas full time, he plays a lot of the big tourneys, and he has so many endoresment and TV deals going that he probqbly doesn't have time for the cash games.

hellmuths the only one i like watching on tv the rest i could care less about.  it seems like a lot of the amateurs gun for him and the pros love to needle him, however he is his own worst enemy, because they needle him because it clearly effects his play.  my favorite hellmuth event was with him and corkins and matusow.

hellmuth seemed to do pretty well in the High stakes poker game on GSN. He caught a few coolers, but he won some big pots where his big hands held up. Of course that doesn't always happen. He wasn't messing around though, with QQ he would make it 25 K to go, Farha would give him action then.
