Help.....I'm going to a hold em tournament this Friday

I've never played holdem but I have watched plenty of the world series of poker and have played many pretend hands and I feel I have a good feel on how to play and win......for example, I've come to realize Q 8 can be  pretty good hole cards......
 
there is gonna be 300-400 people divided into 3 qualifying rounds and the top 15% plays for the championship.....the top 15 cash and the winner gets 10 grand or a spot in the wsop main event.....my dream is to play in the wsop main event but if I was somehow lucky enough to win I'd take the cash
 
anybody have any advice on sticking around til the end and has anybody here ever won one of these events? 
 
I'm excited, I watched the 2007 wsop for 3 hours last nite on espn 2
 
also, the offer one rebuy and one add on....are these good ideas?
 
80 dollars for $1,200 in chips for the rebuy and add on......hopefully I don't need the rebuy but the add on seems nice for security

hard to give much advice if you have never played before.  Q8 is not a very good starting hand.  as for rebuys, you will find a lot more aggressive play in a rebuy tournament because everyone tries to double up and if it doesnt work they rebuy.  You can call a little lighter early on while the rebuys are still available because of this.  Use the rebuy when you bust out and add on only if you are short stacked.  If you have a big lead on the avg stack no real need to take the add on because it will probably be an insignificant increase in chips.  If you happen to win take the 10k.

please tell me youre joking. I think you are, at least I hope you are. This is the statement me and my buddies make to each other jokin around cuz its so ridiculous. then you come out here and say it. If youre joking, it was funny. If not, dont try to learn any more about the game. Watching some WSOP on Tv and playing a few "pretend" hands are all you need to do to beat the game

hey, you need plenty of dead money in these tourneys, to overcome any rake, bad luck, bad beats and whatever else.

Heres a few things to remember
 
1.  when you call out of position make sure you check after the flop this way you will have position, making you a master of every hand you are in.
 
2.  If a person check raises you they are bluffing so just go all in.
 
3.  When on the button never raise just smooth call the blinds this way you can get a free flop.
 
4.  Rebuy right away this way you will be the big stack at the table and be able to bully everyone around.

Not sure this is valid advice. As for dead money , some people are just gonna have to figure out things themselves

I've come to realize Q 8 can be  pretty good hole cards......

Q 8 is OK. you better not have to call a big raise with it, and you have to hit the flop hard. 2 Pair, or a straight. Problem is you won't have th nut straight and someon with a pair and a gutshot has a good chance. If you hit top pair, you have no kicker.

So J-7 and 10-6 are Ok for the same reasons?  I guess for that matter 6 2 is Ok if you flop a str8 or 2 pair.  I need to adjust my game and loosen up a bit.

And if my 6 2 is suited I could flop a flush.  How much of a raise should I call with that?

obviously you guys aren't too advanced, Q 8 is a better than average hand, and if you are gonna fold everything unless you get AQ or better then you will likely get blinded out. If you are in late position with no raises it's not a bad hand to play. You don't want to limp in with it in early postion. Anyways, it is not your cards you're playing, it's your opponents cards, so you can push with anything really if you feel your opponent will fold.

The best advice I can give as a professional poker player is to pick up a copy of "Why 7-2 Offsuit Is The Best Hand In Poker" written by Phil "the Pill" Helmuth.  This book is often referred to as THE book on poker by many professionals.

I was talking to Danny* over dry martinis last night about this book as a matter of fact.  We both like the concept of "why fold when you could raise".  Also, there's a chapter titled "Checking Your Way To The Final Table" that is invaluable!

Whether you're good at math or not doesn't matter, even though people say that.  What matters is that you go all in before the flop about 40-50 percent of the time.  It really scares the other guys at the table and they will not mess with you after that.  I've done this at the Mirage and Bellagio to win over $2 million in one night!

Well, all I can say is GOOD LUCK and remember, ANY TWO CARDS CAN WIN AT HOLD 'EM!!!
