Heads up, the last hand before this poker place shuts down. Maniac, drunk guy bets 80 dollars in the smoke (or without looking at his cards). It is heads up as the rest of the players head to cash in. I look down and see pocket Aces. I think about what to do as I am up 600 dollars and know he will call his last 500 without looking at his cards. I almost fold not to run into potential bad luck. I know I am supposed to push and maximize my potential profits, but I really wanted to fold. Story to come later

a wise man once told me, "when players win, they tend to tighten up because they don't want to lose their winnings. By doing that, they cheat themselves for not winning more money."
so instead of folding and say "I'm up 600". you can say to yourself "If I fold, I will lose that 500 dollars that I'm suppose to win".
But in this situation, you may have a case with Queens, Jacks, or AK. But AA?

A couple things, where do you live and what cardroom do you play in? $80 straddle and people who lay down aces heads up preflop , sounds like a pretty tough game.
Seriously though, when you made this thread was your thought process like, well i have always heard that folding aces preflop is the worst possible play, but maybe not, hey, i should post this in the poker forum and maybe somebody will agree!

The question of folding pocket aces preflop (cash or tourney, heads up or multiple players) seems to have been brought up a lot on this site recently. I agree with the other posts but especially with Erik, "if you can't call with aces right there, you shouldn't be playing poker". I cannot see any reason to fold pocket aces preflop. If you get a bad beat, so be it but you cannot play scared poker. Scared poker is losing poker.

i would risk it.... seems like a good bet to me.... even if you end up with a bad beat... you'll still be up 100$ right? not to mention odds are in your favor

Never fold aces heads up, you are at least an 80% fave over anything, as good as it gets. against a full table you have to see the flop and then psh them hard if the flop is not dangerous. If the flop is all hearts and you don't have the ace of hearts, then you have to play safe

I would fold there......but only if you want to be the subject of this story on another website:
"I was drunk and it was the last hand of the night and some guy folded A-A to my pre-flop raise....and the best thing was, I never even looked at my cards."
If that doesn't bother you, then go ahead and fold.

Sorry I have been outof town for some time. He flipped over 7 8 and the flop came 337, turn j, river 7. I made the right call but lost a 1000 dollar pot. The point was to se if anyone would have even considered it. I did before pushing all in, knowing he would call and I would have a great chance to double up. Instead I cashed in for the same amount I started with. Thanks for the opinions

Here's one thing I have learned about gambling. And poker is gambling.
When you are UP and winning, and the thought comes into your head "Maybe I should quit and go home with this profit"....
That usually is the time to quit. This thread is really not about folding aces preflop. It's about taking a profit and being happy with it. About not being greedy. And this goes for any type of gambling. I learned this lesson in horse and dog racing.
I bet your ride home really sucked after you lost $500 on your last hand. I know cause I have been there many times.
If you were happy with the $600 profit you should have folded or maybe even not have played that hand.
Listen to that voice in your head that says "GO HOME". He's right most of the time.
