A few years ago, I worked for UPMC Shadyside. I always played poker with this kid Josh that worked there and went to Pitt. I was going to a local joint that held "charity" tourneys with 2/4 and 5/10 cash games. Josh asks if he can bring his buddy Nick.. not even old enough to drink at the time.

I pick them up after work and this kid has the super dark gucci type shades on and his ipod... he looked silly. We played a couple of games heads up as we headed to a friends house to meet before going to the tourney. The kid was wild, yet had great reads on people. He busted out of the tourney that night, but was so hooked on being a good player it wasn't funny.

I no longer work there and haven't seen him much since, but he has since moved to Vegas and is now in the last 35 left. Keep an eye on him, he might be a sleeper as this thing winds down. Here is an article on his run so far...

Just an fyi, he's not being talked about very kindly on another poker message board from a guy that was at his table earlier and got knocked out by Cantu who was also at the same table.

Sorry, I'm not goin' post what other message board, but if you looked around long enough, you'd probably be able to find it.

I'm not trying to cause trouble, because I obviously don't know your friend and have nothing against him because of that.  But, I just thought I'd mention it, because I was just reading about him (not in a good way) on another board from a pretty stand up guy, from what I know (a local pro).

i have played with this guy a few times he is a decent player nothing great.  you have to understand the caliber of play in pittsburgh compared to vegas (the big games and tournaments) its like the big sky conference compared to the pac 10.  not surprised he won big in pittsburgh and is being thought of lightly in a big event.  with that said its now anybodys game, i wish the kid all the best.

If it was for a small % of his chips, and if he had an ace which he felt may have been live if it hit, it could have been the right call. You've gotta gamble sometimes, if you don't wanna gamble you likely won't go much farther anyways.

He wasn't hitting it big in Pittsburgh.... he was getting crushed at the PA Poker tourneys... that is what makes this so much better...

I just came from the Rio.  Saw him at the table, with a whole crew of friends on the rail.

Great story really, kid comes to Vegas to do it....and guess what...two weeks later - BAM!!

Don't worry about the other player talking shit about him on the other messageboard.  He actually didn't say anything that bad about your boy anyway, just that he found him annoying or some dumb shit.  Isn't that the case at any table??  He's just pissed because he's sitting at home at not at the Rio.  He didn't cash either, fyi.

I see now that he's about 13th in chip count (~500k payout), and seated at the ESPN feature table.

kid bluffed it all off into the 2nd nuts.  hell of a payday and run still.  im sure he was quite lucky a few times, but they all have been lucky multiple times to get to this point.  i dont really like the way he went out getting involved with a bad hand out of position then bluffing it away.  463000 is a ton of money way more then i have ever seen in a day of poker.
