Hi guys, I had an opinion question.  I am really trying to make a living from poker, but have been

having trouble finding "my game".  I tried cash, up down up down then completely broke.  I tried

sit&gos, but slow money.   How do you feel about this?  Are cash games better or sit&go's??

    Thanks people,
    Best Regards!

Pros make their money at the cash games.  It takes alot of luck to cash in tourneys.  Tourney will obviously pay the bigger reward, but day in and day out, these boys play cash games to build their bank rolls.

I prefer cash games as a way to make more money.  Of course there is variance but if you can play and can read your opponents (especially if you play against the same players regularly) cash games are more profitable.  You have to have alot of luck to win the tournaments.

The thing is, I believe I'm a good poker player, in terms of playing the game and how to play the cards, and putting opponents on cards, i know all that.  My trouble is tilt.  I go on tilt.  I lost my bank roll playing 10-20 several times.  I guess I didn't really have a bankroll to afford 10-20 in the first place.. but whatever, i had to play.  So basically i quit the cash games, cause anything lower than 5-10 i think is pointless and stupid playing cause of chasers.

so now i play only online sit n gos with 10 dollar buy ins.. and i'm really good, i average about 2nd, making about 30 dollars a day and cashing about 600 per month worste case scenario.  Well i guess i live at home with parents so it's okay for now..  but sit n gos are just so easy, just wait till u get blinded out and make a few steals here and there to stay in, and u're almost always guarnateed 3rd... my opinion.  but yeah, to make about 600 a month is really my goal.  and this time, i'm not going back to the cash games!

In my opinion cash games are the way to make money playing poker and most decent players will mostly agree with me. Sit n' Go's are fun and profitable, but there will be variance in sit n' gos as well. Not sure how long you have been playing and what your sample size is, so really there is no way of knowing whether or not what you are doing is sustainable. Now that I have children and have moved away from Vegas I find myself playing Sit n' Go's a lot more than cash games, due entirely to time restrictions.

Now, regarding the above quote:  I'm not trying to be a dick with what I'm about to say.

    • Tilt: If you go on tilt and can't control it until the point you are bust, you have a major problem. My guess is that you aren't a good player when on tilt. If you don't fix this, you won't make money playing cards.
    • Bankroll: What in the hell are you doing playing a game you aren't bankrolled for???  That is just asking for trouble and could have been one of the main causes of tilting. No offense, but people who play at games they aren't bankrolled for are just praying they get lucky before they go bust. You leave yourself no room for error in this situation.
    • Level of play: You need to find a level of play that you can beat. The lower level games may seem pointless to you, but if you can't beat all the "chasers" in those games then you have absolutely ZERO chance of beating people at a higher level. And don't fool yourself into thinking that better players will be a better match for you. If you can't beat the idiots, you can't win, period.
    • Finally, make sure you evaluate yourself honestly. Many people believe they are good poker players and they aren't. I'm not saying this applies to you. Truly evaluate how you played big hands and what went right/wrong. Make sure a bad beat is really that and not a mistake you made somewhere in the hand. I've often found after careful evaluation that I often contributed to my "shitty" luck. But most of all, be honest with yourself about ability, bankroll and the levels you play at. Obviously you recognize that you tilt and that is a good thing. The first step is admitting you have a problem!  You'll be fine.

Good luck with you poker playing. I hope it goes well for you.

Do not agree about being 5/10 being pointless, quite the reverse, it's a very soft game and highly profitable especially for a grinder like you. Calling stations are the people you want at your game. In the golden days at Party there were people making $800 per hour multitabling 5/10. Live it is possible to make $50 per hour at 5/10.
Personally I think cash games are the truest test of skill in poker.

You play many more hands than in a MTT particularly heads up or short handed. Cash game players tend to be good tournament players (look at Kenny Tran) but you get tournament players who can't play cash games, which is why at least half of the "pros" you see on t.v are busto and being staked by someone else.

I play mainly cash games and play a few of the juicier tournaments to keep things fresh. But each to their own. I'm pleased there are so many "tourny" experts/wiseasses/nerds because when they come to the cash tables and play proper poker they get .
