a coworker of mine was telling me about her church festival, saying they had gambling there and i was kinda blah blah blah but anyways i found myself bored last night so i was like what the hell and go to it.  turned out to be a nice setup with 2 money wheels blackjack and good ole texas holdem.  i only took like 70 bucks thinkin it would be pretty lame.  anyways they had 25 dollar tournaments and 1 2 nl.  i played a tournament lost then won the 2nd one and said what the hell ill play 1 2 for an hour or so.  usually when i play cash live, its 5 10 nl.  anyways i got an awful beat and made a way too tight laydown but still won about 200 in an hour.  one interesting hand:

young kid said he was 21 looked 18, i think he just said this because he was drinking made it 12 bucks preflop everyone folds i got 10j suited in small blind and call.  flop was 1053 rainbow i check he bets 12, i immediately put him on ak aq and call.  turn was the jack i check hopin for the bet but he checks anyways rivers the ace.  i bet 30 he makes it 70 i think for a bit and say why raise aq ak maybe he does have a10 and got me obviously i call anyways and sure enough he shows aq and i win.  i really hate his raise on the river though.  would anyone else be raising here?  seriously what hand could i call a raise with there that he could beat?  the way the hand played out, i think that aq is a call hand 100% of the time.  if i had the aq i would have probably bet just a bit more on the flop because i think an identical preflop and flop bet looks like a miss every time almost, i do like his check on the turn because he has to think he has 4 sure outs and 6 decent cards to see (even though they would have been bad here).  however what can i call with that he has beat there?
if i slowplay a set or 2 pair hes beat, if im bluffing i dont call anyways, i wouldnt be calling the flop with acehigh and air.

little things like this are what winning and losing in poker are all about if thats a 5 10 game thats a 200 dollar mistake not a 40 dollar one.  everyone is gonna have the set vs set hands go for and against him, but i would never ever lost as much as he did on that hand.  would like someone elses take on this hand.

one last thing, i was amazed at how many young kids were playing there, there was like 14 15 yr olds playing poker, even though it said must be 18 to play.

even though the stakes are low i might go back to this place again this weekend (with a real wad of cash tonight) its like almost 100%sure money, had to be the easiest game i ever saw.

i think you played it well. he played it bad.

I might have popped it on the flop, depending on the read you got from him about what kind of player he was, as what would you do, if the turn wasnt a J...say a 4 or something and you lead out, and he comes over the top, or what not. Then you dont even know where you might be...he could have an over pair. just a diff way to look at it.

i hope you gave the church some money back!

Played it well, sometimes you gotta take a chance in order to make money. YOu would've never gotten that extra 70 if you hadn't just check called the flop and checked the turn, cuz if you raise him on the flop he probably can't call and you get no more. That was a dumb raise by him on the river anyway.

well of course nothing ever goes easy i went back friday and saturday lost a little was still up for the weekend (a whole 50 bucks i think), some of the hands i could tell you, you wouldnt even believe.  i hate bad beat stories but here is one, its funny because of what the guy says:

i got ak on the button have about 150 2 limps i make it 12, small blind calls so do the limpers, flop was kj7 2 clubs its checked to me i bet 50 a little overbet even because these guys call everything small blind who was calling everytthing and anything calls the other 2 fold.  turns the 6 of spades and he checks and honestly i had a weird feeling that he had something stupid liek 76 thats how bad these ppl were, but i put in the last 90 bucks i got in front of me and he calls and shows jack6.  river of course doesnt help i lose and i dont say anything at all, then he says "i knew you had ace king" and i just laughed. o well didnt get nothing else friday was down saturday cameback and pulled the very small profit for the weekend.  i just think its funny he knows i got ak and he still calls the overbet of the pot with 5 outs, congratulations buddy.  best part was he left after that hand.

i do got a funny story/embarrassing moment from saturday though.  they had a dice game and i was screwin around waitin to play poker and some kinda hot girl was playing too and i was talking to her and i kept rolling 7 and losing and she puts money on 10 to hit and she says no 7 and i said alright if i roll the 10 though you have to give me your number and she just laughs and it happens i roll the 10. so i get the number and was talking to her and she says she has a busy week with cheerleading and i start thinking shouldnt college cheerleaders already be there and i say well who are you a cheerleader for and she says a local high school and i say o ok and thankfully my poker seat opened up right then so i didnt have to talk to her anymore, but i had no reason to think she was in high school since it clearly said no one under 18 allowed. o well that was a microcosm of the weekend.  everytime i find one of these juicy games, same shit always happens, i get awful hands nonstop or the ppl hit and run immediately. they werent really playin long sessions there tho, and i was only there for about 10 hours, but only up 50 dollars feels like a loss, i would expect at least 500 for the weekend.  at least i didnt lose that woudl have been real sick.

thanks guys for responding to my first hand.  i dont like checkraising on the flop because then the hand loses value in my mind.  i would prefer to lead out over a checkraise.  i was playing hands like that safe because i felt like if i ever got a great hand, i was gonna get paid off.  on the turn, my plan was to check if the 10 thru ace came, and lead out if it was a 2 thru 9.  if i checkraise the flop and my reads wrong and he has say aa then he shoves in almost for sure and i have a mess.  by just calling then seeing the turn i would have at least given myself another card to suckout on aa, if that is indeed what he had.  of course he could get lucky and catch on the turn, but i was trying to keep these pots as small as possible, so that is why i just called the flop.

I used to play vs my mortgage broker friends who were all rich and didnt know how to play poker.

I started one night with 200 and left with 2150.

Find people with a lot of money who don't know how to play poker and you will be able to play tight and win nearly all the time.  Those guys just want to gamble.

I'm still sorting thru the whole "church festival/ hold em" dichotomy... we got baptists in Texas that would bring down fire and brimstone on that action in very short order.  Great stories though and hard to argue with the plays
