Continued subpar trolling from our main "man" calde. I thought we talked about this.
@StumpTownStu
Have you ever been to Silver Falls? Most of my hikes are more strenuous than this is apparently.
An older couple I ran into were telling me about it. I guess close to Woodburn.
They say most folks go to South Falls. But they say the North Falls Trailhead area is less crowded and has stunning views of the falls and overhangs. They had some nice pictures. I Glanced at it online and it looks nice.
Just curious if you had ever been and if it is worth a day hike there.

I just researched Denmarks auto registration taxes. And I bitch when paying 6% state sales tax.
And Denmark even has a VAT tax on tampons, 25%.

The Silver Falls near me? At least once a year. It is definitely not strenuous. You can do the loop hike and see most of the main falls. Are you near Woodburn right now?

R.I.P I don't think he was knocking the lining out like his dad and granddad.

No. Just bumped into this nice couple down here and we talked about hiking and they told me it was not really for hardcore hikers or overnight hikers but they thought I would enjoy the views there. I was telling them that I like to go to different places each year. They say they make the drive from some town near Portland I had never heard of… Hills something or other I think.
But they say it is definitely worth it and has some nice places to eat and shop nearby also.
I knew we had talked about a couple of places in WA — so I figured you’d know this one also. But didn’t know you went that often.
I will put it on the list for sure then.
They had some nice pictures where the path went under like a tunnel carved in the side of the mountain behind the falls. Looked pretty awesome.

And Silver Falls is definitely worth it, depending on where you are. It's perfect for i'm hiking with the mrs. She likes nice, chill hikes. There isn't a ton of elevation gain and the trails are mellow. It's a good representation of Western Cascades topography/geology. Lava flows that have been carved out by rivers and streams. If you're hiking solo and need a partner, if i'm in town, I would probably be able to meet up. It's not thar far from me.

Hillsboro.
There are other good hikes in the area, and on the Washington side too. For example, Mount St. Helen is in close proximity to the Portland metro.
The town they mentioned, Woodburn, is not much to speak of and not worth a visit, aside from a beacon from which to head east into the foothills/mountains. It's also close to me and I do go there for the outlet stores, and if I need something from a Walmart. Too many hombres for my taste though. Not necessarily bad hombres. Just hombres. There are countless cute/cool Oregon towns in Oregon. Woodburn just isn't one of them.

Very cool! I knew you were in the PNW. But had no idea you were close to the exact area they were from.
I think you are right — Hillsboro. The way they talked it is some sort of retirement community maybe. I looked at map just now and that seemed the direction they say they drove from.
They were going to Machu Picchu next month and I was telling them that it is actually a little tougher trek than most folks realize because of the altitude mainly. That is when they say the ones over by them were easier but worth the views.
Most of my hiking lately has been either down here or up in Banff because my brother-in-law is based out of Calgary. So, I can mix my skiing and hiking while I visit them also.
I may have to take you up on that the next time I am in that area. Even though they were older they seemed to know hiking and said it was good recreational hike. So glad to know you agree with them.

Hillsboro is just a city on the outskirts of Portland. Nothing remarkable about it. One of the bigger suburbs. Probably has 100K people but no personality whatsoever. Beaverton, where Nike is based, is in that same area. And much the same, one of the bigger suburbs but no personality.
Silver Falls is beautiful but it's not like Yosemite. What I mean by that is, it's not a place to take a trip specifically to visit. It's a place worth visiting if already visiting the area. For a real destination, the Enchantments in north central Washington would be it, in my opinion. In the northern Cascades, the basalts and other volcanic rock gives way to some granite plutons. So there are parts of the northern cascades that feel more like the Sierra than the rest of the Cascades.

Gotcha. I will check it out when in the area then.
I like both Cascades and Sierra, also a lot of the Appalachian Trail.
But for me nothing beats the Canadian Rockies.

Hmm it is hard to pinpoint why they left - it depends a little where they came from and when they left - but most of them left because of: intern wars, the plague epidemic or poverty - so yeah the “whiny bitches of Europe” you could call your ancestors - without it being much of a stretch

But I don’t hold you accountable for what your ancestors did - that would be weird - you have nothing to do with them neither good nor bad - my ancestors killed people on autopilot - not much to be proud of in that either

Colonists came to America because they wanted political liberty. They wanted religious freedom and economic opportunity. The United States is a country where individual rights and self-government are important.

Whistler one of my favorite places and then over towards Banff.
We now live about 5 miles off the AT Trail. This is our favorite time of year as we'll host and trail angel the thru hikers. Great people and better stories.

Your adoptive mother was a saint. And your biological mother was just a child who experienced the most vile of acts, something no human deserves. Yet here you are. It speaks volumes that she made it out the other side. I appreciate that given your story, you became a person who hosts thru hikers and trail angels.

Very good to know you live in a gorgeous area.
I agree about Whistler as well. I have been fortunate to have been all over the world and so folks will inevitably ask my favorite and worst places that I have been. I always tell folks that Banff is maybe my favorite — winter or summer.
I always say that everyone should stay at the Fairmont at least once — in the winter especially.
I have hiked all over the AT. I keep saying that one day I plan to thru-hike it but have not gotten around to it. I prefer to hike and camp in the winter and really enjoy it that time of year and always run into thru-hikers and they really seem to enjoy it.
In fact, some of my best equipment I got at a store where the AT crossed a highway in NC. Gorgeous area.

Ok call it what you want - I call it pussies that couldn’t handle life
- but don’t get me wrong when we have seen what a lot of you have grown into - the happiness of you leaving is mutual

Well in winter there are no snakes, so that's huge in my book.
Love seeing thru hikers and asking "where ya headed" They pause and light up before uttering the shit eating "Maine"
Definitely a nice area where we are. When we host, they usually ends up taking a zero day which is a bit of a testament.

They were in the range of $10 a dozen, give or take, depending on brand and current sale. Some were $9. Some were $12. I went from getting a farm fresh dozen for $3-$4 to not being able to get a dozen from any of the many farms around me. There just wasn't stock. I once kept chickens and thought about doing it again but evrn if you really like eating eggs, it's literally impossible to use all the eggs and they go to waste.
