That was an attack on his mother, and on him. And on a site like this one, where i'm one of the few who are under 50, you have to assume there is at least a possibility that a person's mother is deceased.

That's definitely not strict moderation, it's called basic decency – you damn well speak respectfully about people's families, whether it's their mother, father, sister, brother, or their childhood friend who's gay – generally, you just don't speak badly about people who aren't present, who have no relevance to the conversation, and who mean something to the other person – were you never taught any manners, man?

I think you're projecting. I think you're dad was probably a drug addict, and probably a closet homosexual. Possibly he contracted HIV through shared needles and/or gay sex. I think that is a stretch and someone would have to want to see it that way just to make it an issue.

To me it is akin to calling someone a ‘momma’s boy’.  That is an attack on the guy you are calling that; not an attack on his mother.  

If someone wanted to attack a person’s mother they would use much stronger language and a direct attack, where you did not have to purposefully interpret it that way.  
Otherwise, you have to determine ‘intent’.  When it is a direct attack on someone else you do not have to make that determination and every once clearly would see it for that.  

But either way, whether someone wanted to jump to that conclusion or not, that was very mild compared to the language and tone that started it.  
Especially, as you say, these folks seem older and should not even have to use that tone or language to get their point across.  But age should not even matter.  A ‘mother’ should have taught them all — ‘sticks and stones’…
So, why even get upset and reply back to it that way.  Just silly.

To me when someone has to start using foul language and personal attacks — they either do not have a good argument, or are frustrated and simply have lost the argument.  

Either way it is silly to do either. 
But it is silly to ‘penalize’ someone for a ‘milder’ reply on a political forum.  

What is the old retort to the standard personal pejorative?  “Well, if you kept your mother out of the streets…”  They only use that retort because they want to turn it into an attack on the other person’s mother; but know that person was not really attacking their mother, but simply calling them a foul name.

But people are oversly sensitive about politics and especially here.

Also, another point about the older people on here, it seems they certainly get more of a ‘pass’.  
Look directly on 4-5 of what certainly seems some of the older fellows and those nasty tone and language.  I would expect better from the older generation, no matter their politics.

But I do see how you can see it the way you see it.

What, do they not sell Pappy where you live? You play these childish games. You dance around with your, if I wanted to insult his mother... blowies for formula, etc. It shows you're a bitch, just like your mom's a bitch. I've said things on this site I haven't been proud of. Things I thought were warranted. And I have made amend when wrong. This is a small community, which means it's different than the typical "social media experience". You aren't shouting expletives into cyberspace. Attacks feel more personal. And "friends" feel more like friends. Midnight is my friend. So please, pretty please, take it personally when I say, Eat a dick like your mother used to. Your adoptive mother. Probably the biological too.

The adoption thing explains so much actually. No amount of love from your adoptive parents fixes you guys.

Trust me, (I am sure you already know this) but this site has relatively mild forums, comparatively speaking. 
I am on some others that are far worse.  
Even some of the investment forums that you would not think of being this way are worse.

Religion and politics are always the worst.  It is far more productive not to get into that back-and-forth when it deteriorates that way.  
There are places where an actual discussion can be had about polar opposite views.  
But that is basically because both parties will at least be informed about the issue and are there about that overall broad topic.

You have to always keep in mind most folks are on this site about sports in the beginning.  Their knowledge about other subjects is generally very superficial—even with sports a lot of the time.

That is why, even with sports, when folks are presented with statistics or facts that counter their view, they get frustrated.

In sports, you can always simply have an opinion that Montana is better than Brady, or that Marino was better than both.  No amount of data will sway you from it, and shouldn’t — you are simply a fan.

So, the same mindset is used when discussing other topics on here:  people get frustrated with counter arguments that use evidence and do not have anything substantive to respond with.  Therefore, they respond with snarky replies or personal attacks or change the subject.

So, I think on here you have to just have a general overview talk on subjects and go elsewhere for a true in-depth conversation.  Sadly, this even includes sports sometimes.

But to me this is far and away the best sports forum and should be seen as that and the rest used as just an entertainment source almost.
