Not sure why everyone is hating on Florida. They have a better record in regulation than New Jersey does. The only difference between these teams is the Devils won the skills competitions this year (16 OT and SO wins) while Florida didn't. There are no skills comps in the playoffs. Panthers have home ice and will be catching good plus money. Sounds like value with two equal teams.
Pens will wipe the floor with the Flyers. Philly's been taking shots at these guys all week while Pittsburgh hasn't said a word. You can already tell Philly is scared. Philly leads the league in minor penalties by a country mile and putting Pens on the PP will be death. This is where losing Pronger finally catches up with them. Pens also have the much better goalie. Everyone thinks this is going to be the best series and when that happens it is usually a blowout.
Think the Rags are a fraud but not sure Ottawa is the team to beat em. Not sure there will be value for me in WSH/BOS
St. Louis is the biggest flake in the league. 3 things needed to win a cup: Ability to score, win on the road, and playoff experience. Blues don't have any of those. They grossly overachieved and fell back to earth late. Think they go out 1st round.
NSH and VAN are head and shoulders the best teams in the west.

I wish you were correct about my Penguins vs the Flyers, andarmac99 BUT WHO is this " the much better goalie" you speak of? Fleury has been VERY weak lately and was PULLED today in the 2nd period for "E Normous" Johnson.
I think that the Flyers are the absolute WORST 1st round matchup we could have drawn. ANYTHING can HAPPEN and they beat us 4 games to 2 in the season series
AND today is the 1st TIME the Flyers ever LOST @ the new CEC arena.

Rat - Fleury was pulled today because it was a meaningless game.
Brzygalov is a mental midget. This guy does not have the makeup mentally to succeed in the pressure packed playoffs and IMO is far more susceptible to pull a Luongo type meltdown than win a series. He was arguably the best goalie in the league the last two years in Phoenix and he was absolutely horrific in the playoffs. Now he has to face one of the deepest teams I have ever seen. This team led the league in goals scored and their best player played 1/4 of the season. Since Crosby came back they have scored at least 3 goals in all but one game! Averaging 4.5 over that span. GL Bryz.
Fleury plays very well in big games. I trust him much, much more regardless of what he has done in the regular season. He's always seemed to be better in big games in the playoffs than he was in the regular season.
Regular season series mean nothing to me. Sample sizes are too small and situations are totally different: In the regular season teams are banged up, traveling, and enduring the grinder of the season. If anything knowing that Philly won the regular season series and own them their own building will only help motivate the Pens.

Bylsma planned to play 2 goalies. Nobody was PULLED from the game. Fleury is much better hands down. I will take my chances with him anytime in big games.

Regular season records of one team versus another mean very little in the playoffs. Playoff hockey is a totally different animal. During the season there are obviously circumstances where teams are in different scheduling situations, injuries ect...Certain teams & coaches are also better than others with time to prepare for one specific team in a long series.

lrr generally the first game of the first series favors unders, but how much more can the pens/flyers feel each other out? are you still favoring over like it was a reg season game?

TOUGH one, Pottsy. the last landed right on a 6 as they played "center ice shinney" in the 3rd. I'm sure Bylsma will try to "do the tighten up" BUT with two teams like BOTH the Pens and Flys, WHO KNOWS? really comes down to Flower and Bryz

I truly believe any chance that the Flyers had of winning the Cup ended early this year when Pronger went down. They still put together a nice regular season, but I would be shocked to see them take down the Pens.

i got game ones, pens/flyers un6 -120 ov 6 even, all 7 other games the goals are set at 5! there was one game that the over was-145, so might hit 5.5

OT wins aren't "skills competition wins" since that is how they settle a tie game in the playoffs. And from what I can see on NHL.com - NJ had more legit wins (not going to a shootout) than the Panthers did. 36-32. And when you factor in the pathetic division that the Panthers play in - versus the much more competitive division that the Devils had to navigate, it's clear that the Devils had the MUCH more impressive season. And that's not even taking into account goal differential (the Devils were plus 19 for the year - the Panthers a big fat -24 which is worse than my beloved Habs. The Panthers are VASTLY overrated and WILL lose to the Devils.)

Very good points... I really like what you said about the divisions and their scheduling, I knew that NJ had alot more wins but I forgot that they had a much harder schedule. Think your right, NJ will win in either 4 or 5

SO skills competition OT is hockeyt
Devils were 36-30-16 if there were ties Panthers were 32-33-17 if there were ties. Its not as big a difference as their "real records" but the Devils are the better deeper team and played in the best division in the NHL

OT is a skills competition in the regular season. It's 4 on 4 wide open hockey where everyone is guaranteed a point and have absolutely nothing to lose. Playoff hockey is 5 on 5 and the same as regulation play. Panthers had the better record in those situations.
I'm not saying Florida is a great team at all, in fact they are crap. But New Jersey is marginally better if that. Seeing them lay -200 on the road is comical. They were minus units as -150 or more favs this year. Their regulation record was barely above .500 and they were not good on 5-on-5 play. Their best players (Parise, Kovalchuk, Elias) were all minus players on the year.
Florida isn't vastly overrated because everyone thinks they are garbage and will be dusted by the Devils. Seriously, not a single talking head will pick this team to win the series. None. Overrated teams are teams that people think are good but actually aren't, the Devils fit that description to a T. I'm not saying Florida is going to win but this series but I think long term New Jersey at -200 in this series is -EV at it's finest.

I think Florida is a scrappy team. I like what Dale Tallon has done there this year. Had the chance to watch them a few times against the Jets and Versteeg, Campbell, Fleischmann, all played well against them. The wildcard to me is the goaltending. Both Theo and Clem, looked so solid one game, then could easily have an off game the next time around. I am not taking anything from New Jersey, I just think Florida will put up more of an effort than people think.
The other team that impressed me this year was Ottawa. I think Maclean has done a tremendous job coaching them this year and Anderson is a decent enough goalie that he could give the Rangers fits. They have a lot of youth but still some experience and Karlsson is an absolute stud. Spezza, has to be at the top of his game for them to have a shot, but at +200, I do like this price.

question is what Marty Brodeur will we see this playoffs, the one who played the regular season and looked like he was back into form, or the one who has played in their past couple playoff series and got lit up like a christmas tree.

The Devils were priced at -160 not -200. They have now been bet up to -200. The current line now does hold some value with Florida. I myself thought enough of the Devils to pay the opening line -160 price tag. Florida is a scrappy team, but also extremely inexperienced when it comes to playoff hockey, and they were looking a little gassed as well down the stretch.
It's not a knock on Florida to think they will lose as they accomplished quite a bit with their limited overall skill level.
The Devils have some serious playoff experience in their small core group of players and that means a lot at this time of year.
People in this thread comparing the Devils record with that of the Panthers is just comical. The Panthers play in by far the weakest division in the NHL, while the Devils play in a division that provides the East Conference with HALF of it's playoff teams who happen to be the top 3 seeds point wise, and with Jersey being tied with Boston for the 4th most.
The Panthers did fair well enough against the Devils in the regular season but as has already been noted in here that means nothing now.
I do see a competitive series but in the end New Jersey should be ashamed of themselves if they do not defeat this Panther team.
The lion and the tiger may be more powerful, but the wolf doesn't perform in the circus.

100% accurate
I like the Devils myself but definitely couldn't see myself betting them at -200 without home ice. -150 on the Devils is one thing, -200 is really, really pushing it.
