What a terrible terrible trade.
Ian White is your best all around defensive player. Had a plus rating on the Leafs last two seasons and that's saying something on that team.
Phaneuff is overrated, I don't even think he was ever in contention to be on team Canada. Glad to see Yzerman and Co. are starting to see how poorly he can play at times.

Prediction time because that's what we do here at Covers.
Phaneuff will be a failure just like Komiserik, Van Ryn, Excelby, Beauchemin,, etc
Giguere wont be able to stop a beachball even though he's a Cup champion.
Toskala will be the most improved goaltender in the league and the Ducks make a successful bid for the playoffs.
Guaranteed prediction: Burke and Leafs will remain laughing stock of the league. Gotta love Burke trading away all their youth. Whatever happened to building thru the draft. FARCE

So the speculation...and, at this point it's JUST speculation...is that the "other deal" that Burke claims to be working on finalizing will involve the Leafs getting Giguere. This will also include the Leafs getting one of Anaheim's first-round draft picks for taking on Giggy's giant salary.

Burke is the most overrated GM in the game, the Leafs are an absolute train wreck. Way to add a D-Man on his way down and a goalie who basically had 1 or 2 years. Good thing they didnt try to get any skill players, wouldnt want to address that issue.

I dont think this in any way means Giguere is the starting goalie. Seems like its just paying for his salary and in return getting a draft pick(which we of course need badly)

It's quite a drastic move for a goalie to come from Europe to North America. Gustavsson gives up big rebounds. In Europe, with the bigger ice surface, those rebounds go into the corner and away from the play.
Giguere's a definite insurance policy for the next year or two, IMO.

The Leafs now have three of the most overrated and overpaid defensmen in the league with Phaneuf, Komisarek and Finger.
It is definitley a very big and physical blueline which I am sure Burke loves.
The thing with Phaneuf is he needs someone good to play with and at his salary he should not. Good thing he is only about 25 so he can still improve.
The offense just got even worse, and while the defense got a lot more bruising whether it became better defensively is another question.
