I can't believe I read every word of this back-n-forth....Van's logic is correct.

Devil Fan, I'm guessing you are a helluva day trader and carry that thinking into this format.  Its not the same.  I am NOT SAYING YOUR SYSTEM CAN'T MAKE YOU MONEY, but you are not optimizing your profits.  I'm a grinder too (see image) but I grind with my best chance to OPTIMIZE my profits.

Try what Van is saying for a week or so and see if it works, but for god sake don't tell him.

    GL to all this week!

I already answered these questions probably 47 posts back.

If we are talking real money like thousands of dollars or even high hundreds and I can guarantee that in my pocket, then I would probably hedge. If we are talking peanuts or a few hundred, then no, I dont hedge.

Like I also said earlier, it depends on the kind of day or week I am having.  If I am up big, I am more inclinded to let it roll.  If I am down or having a shit week and I can be assured to get a nice chunk of it back, I probably hedge.

I cant explain it any more than that.

TSW--The comment by me that prompted that response was in response to Van saying to roll it ALL into the 4th game.... please read all comments in context.....if you roll it all and lose, you win nothing....

DF- I know, just felt it was an important point to make, and one that someome might not consider.  We need someone to do a summary on all this once it is done.

The original parlay bet as it is, would be no different than taking a position in IBM. Difference between the 'parlay' position and the 'IBM' position is just the risk involved.

if you buy IBM at 80 and it runs to 85 in a day or so...earnings after the bell. if they are good it could open at 95. if they are bad, it could open at 75

at 3:50 do you sell and take your profits or do you hold through earnings with the hope of hitting a home run...

that is how i look at it. each game is different, each pitcher, quarterback, small forward is different...i cant imagine that the expected value of a play is constant since circumstances change with every game...beyond fundamentals

DevilFan - i was born on LI...maybe its in the water

The original parlay bet as it is, would be no different than taking a position in IBM. Difference between the 'parlay' position and the 'IBM' position is just the risk involved.

if you buy IBM at 80 and it runs to 85 in a day or so...earnings after the bell. if they are good it could open at 95. if they are bad, it could open at 75

at 3:50 do you sell and take your profits or do you hold through earnings with the hope of hitting a home run...

that is how i look at it. each game is different, each pitcher, quarterback, small forward is different...i cant imagine that the expected value of a play is constant since circumstances change with every game...beyond fundamentals

lasvegasloser... I have a job... a well paying job.... an attorney in new york and I work my ass off... more hours every week that you probably do....I don't gamble to pay my bills... I gamble for fun, to make some extra money...let the wife use that to buy her shoes instead of hitting the bank account....

I don't know who you are but knowing you joined in Sept., you are probably a SAF.

Like I also said earlier, it depends on the kind of day or week I am having.  If I am up big, I am more inclinded to let it roll.  If I am down or having a shit week and I can be assured to get a nice chunk of it back, I probably hedge.

I cant explain it any more than that.

    It's all relative.

An attorney............hmmm - beginning to wonder.

A good thread to throw into archives...

Well, knowing I spent have the day in this thread, I need to finish up some work before I go home.

Van-- it is what it is at this point but no matter what you say, I am taking the guaranteed money, assuming it is a nice chunk of change...  I can't believe the time I spent debating this today.  I rarely ever play parlays .

You telling me if i have a choice of MAYBE getting 10K or even 9k i should go for broke instead with a 1K investment?..I have a minimum of 1k and i should still go for broke?.Is this the TRUE ballsy gambler that goes for broke?  This is the smart gambler? Because someone doesn't go for it all,he's not a gambler?

It boils down to the creation of one's parlay. You've analyzed all the games and find 3 to your liking.

    i.e. 3 teamer ....all starting at 1pm------acceptable

3 teamer.....2 starting at 1pm and the other at 4:15pm------acceptable as long as you don't hedge.

If you have this "guaranteed" mentality then you can only play

    a 2 teamer with the 1pm games.

I am trying to explain that guaranteeing yourself that dollar by not flipping is a bad idea.  If you flip, today you might get nothing, but tomorrow you will get 4 dollars, and at the end of many days you will have twice the amount of money that you would have had if you took the guaranteed dollar every day.

the point i think you are failing to understand here is that suppose in your hypothetical question you proposed instead of talking about $1 were talking about $1,000 dollars. if someone said i'll give you 4,000 if you win or 1,000 for not flipping the coin and trying i would take the GUARANTEED 1000 EVERYTIME. i understand your point about not making the last bet in the parlay to begin with and the money you are losing on the expected value is real and true, i believe that losing some vig and expected value to gain a GUARANTEED PROFIT IS SMART FOR ME SINCE I AM TRYING TO GRIND OUT A LIVING. now if i were gambling and did not need the money i bet or could win then i would certainly let it ride everytime. to each his own as they say and i think both ways can be smart or dumb depending upon YOUR PERCEPTION AND REALITY.

Parlays suck and they are a waste of money.  I can understand putting 1/4 or 1/3 of a unit on a 3 or 4 teamer with some nice SU wins by some dogs, but aside from that, they're just a bad idea.  In the long run you wont come out ahead.
