Everyone goes through good times and bad. My advice to you is next time you go on a bad streak 3 or 4 losers in a row take a step back and evaluate where things went wrong. To many people try to make all their money back in one day and it just compounds the problem. Don't ever chase! If you are going to play your own plays develop a system that works for you. Also determine ahead of time how much money you can afford to risk in a season and base your bets per game on that amount you can afford to lose. By your post it sounds like $500 was your amount and now you are at that point 1 week in. Now you have to determine if it worth the risk to increase that amount or stop. Only you can decide that. Guessing on games or saying this team should cover on paper is never a good way for future success. Just my 2 cents. Good luck to you! God Bless!

There is a great saying... The difference between someone betting 5 bucks and someone betting 10k is just the color of the chip. It means the same to both.
Saying you lost 5k will be life changing for some, and dust for others. It is more important to talk in units. You need to start organizing a process.

@vanzack
hey Van have you ever heard of any successful handicappers playing nothing but underdog moneyline straight bets? I'm trying to do some math to see if this could be an effective solution?

@LionsIn2023 The NFL is the hardest sport to win at betting. Im going to share something w you and I am being very serious. You said you thought you would TRY sports betting. Apparently, this is not your schitck....its not for alot of other people either but the enticement of the action is too appealing. Long story short....IF you want to continue, bet very small amounts. Sports investing is an activity where you can lose alot of money....FAST. You have already lost an amount you are uncomfortable with. You mentioned that if you lost 2x that amount, it would be very bad news Keep a journal of your bets and why you think your bet should win. Lets use this example....Cleveland is playing Pittsburgh Thursday night. What side do you like? IF you like Pittsburgh.....bet Cleveland.

I have heard of successful handicappers betting anything and everything.
You are on the right track. You need a process. This includes staking, handicapping, methodology etc that is backtested and works. Randomly betting underdog moneyline bets will not work.
If you can get an edge on cockroach races, you should bet it.

The OP said, "500 for me is a lot of money and I'm gonna try to get it back."
You should bet small amounts until you have proven (not just think, believe or hope) to yourself that you are a winning handicapper over a sufficient sample of games. While 2-11 is really bad, such a small sample size doesn't prove anything.
Another facet of successful handicapping is money management. I have read many articles and listened to/watched professional sports bettors' discussions and the overall consensus is that even sharp bettors never risk more than 10% of their sports-betting bankroll on one game or 25% in one week. They usually mentioned a 40-unit bankroll. Betting 13 games was completely unwise and far too risky.
If 500 is a "lot of money," I would definitely suggest cutting way back on your bet size. There is NO proof yet that you are winning handicapper and that the next week will be positive.
Do a LOT of research as you rebuild your bankroll through savings. Write things down and keep an honest record; don't be a victim of "selective memory" wherein you remember your wins, forget your losses, and convince yourself that you are better than you really are. Maybe someday you will be one of the estimated 3% (per Indigo999) who are long-term winners. I certainly am not and I have no problem betting $7 units. I am having a lot of fun, win or lose.
Good luck.

If you’re just starting, just pick 2 teams and only bet there games. For or against and you will get a gauge on how there totals play out if you stay playing there games every week.
