Well I couldn't have been more wrong about LeBron going to anywhere but Miami -- I just didn't think it was a realistic decision. Just like Bill Simmons said, I thought he was choosing between immortality (Knicks), winning (Bulls), and loyalty (Cavs).
I avoided all of the internet during and after the announcement until just right now. Imagine my delight to read the Dan Gilbert letter and then read the following quotes that he gave to the AP after the announcement:
"Gilbert, who posted a letter to Cavs fans on the team's
website shortly after James announced his plans to sign with the Heat,
told The Associated Press late Thursday night that it's "accountability
time" for James.
"He has gotten a free pass," Gilbert said in a
phone interview with The AP. "People have covered up for [James] for
way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is."
...
Gilbert said James quit on the Cavs during their second-round series against the Boston Celtics, who rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate Cleveland.
"He
quit," Gilbert said. "Not just in Game 5, but in Games 2, 4 and 6.
Watch the tape. The Boston series was unlike anything in the history of
sports for a superstar."
...
Gilbert said James never returned a single phone message or text since
the end of the season and that the Cavs were not informed of James'
decision until he went on the air"
Congratulations Dan Gilbert -- you've just made me a Cavaliers fan.

Timberwolves clearly got a steal by getting Michael Beasley for a freaking SECOND rounder and a swap of future first rounders. Good deal for Minny without a doubt.
Isn't this basically an admittance by GM Pat Riley that he completely whiffed on the Beasley pick?

Lebron shouldn't have did what he did (the way he did it) but Dan Gilbert shouldn't have said what he said either. He really made himself look like an ass. What NBA superstar will ever want to play for an owner that treats his players like such? At the end of the day however, I don't think Miami has enough to win a title. If anyone has watched how the NBA playoffs playout with the new generation of players we have, it's evident that this new Heat squad is far from custom-made to make a run. I question their health at the end of the regular season and their 4 dollar an hour bench veterans that will be forced to play valuable playoff minutes. Can you win a title without a bench anymore in the NBA? We'll find out.....but the Heat has a long road ahead of them if they are going to dethrone the Lakers, IMO.

Gilbert is right -- LeBron quit on his team in those games. Everyone who watched it knows it too. That cannot be disputed.
It's refreshing to hear an owner tell the truth rather than spout politically correct BS about how he wishes LeBron well, thanks him for his years of service, etc. etc.
LeBron did Cleveland wrong.

Didn't he meet with Cleveland when he met with every other team?? I know it was scheduled.

Gilbert's just mad because his franchise lost about 70 percent of its net worth last night. He's not mad at LeBron for betraying the city, or the fans, he's mad at LeBron because he is stuck with a franchise that no one is going to want. Gilbert lost the most by losing LeBron, and he is making it obvious.

Pinnacle -- If I'm an NBA superstar, I'd LOVE to play for Gilbert. He pampered the shit out of LeBron, everyone knows that. He made trades that his superstar specifically requested! He catered to James' every whim. If I'm a Superstar, I'd love to have an owner who I know will go the distance to make me happy.

I think I remember some estimates that Cavs would be only worth 25-30% less without LeBron, so its not like he lost the entire value of his franchise or anything.

I hear you Kapono, but if I'm an NBA superstar I want titles more so than pampering. Mark Cuban pampers the hell out of his superstars but it doesn't translate to winning. If I'm a superstar, Im going some place win....period. The message Gilbert's careless rant sends is that if you come play for me and we don't win, I'm throwing your ass under the bus.

All these bull**** moves and strategies is for the birds...This is 2010, and the King has chosen his court.....
Until he quits again. The funny thing is that MIA is D-Wade's court. So Judas I mean LBJ will not even be king of his home court let alone the league. He proved to me once and for all that he doesn't have the leadership to be MJ or Kobe for that matter. BOL but I can guarantee you most of America will love watching MIA fail.

Kap I just posted a similar thread. I completely agree. From a guy who was depressed with the state of affairs with my Wolves now I have some hope. I always loved Beasley and hopefully the change of scenery and pairing with his former AU best bud (Kevin Love) will provide great production.

You cannot honestly believe this do you? I would think that most superstars say they want to win but honestly at the end of the day the money and the royal treatment is worth more than winning. There are some that truely want to win but not many people like Charles Barkley give up a guaranteed $10 million per year contract to sign a one year $1 million contract with a winning team to try to win a championship.

so much for respecting people's decision to do what they want with they're own lives huh ?
bron & co
I don't have that big of a problem with him leaving. Just the way he did it made me HATE this guy. I never really liked him anyway but now I HATE him. He and people like him is what is wrong with sports.

I must be naive then, because anytime I hear any of the REAL NBA superstars talk about what's important to them, it's always about winning championships. Big contracts are nice but if your argument is solely based on money, why do players take less sometimes. There are players out there that want to win and that is their primary driving force. Furthermore, winning titles translates to more long term wealth over the course of a superstar's career than some one-time, giant 5 year deal.

He's free to make his own decisions, Elite. He's a grown ass man.
I just think that the way he went about announcing it was cold blooded. If you are a good person, in my mind, you don't do a community and a team that has done nothing but support you and stand by you wrong like that.

Pinnacle you cannot impose what you would do and assume that is what they would do. Moreover, you are old enough to know that talk is cheap. Just because they say they want to win a championship doesn't mean that they truely give two $hits. There are some to truely will put it ALL on the line but that is very few in the NBA. If you want to know who really cares take a look at the bench of an NBA team during a playoff game and see who is in the game, who wants in the game and who is pissed if they are losing. Those are the ones who care. Like I said you cannot impose your mentality because it is different.
I am sure you like I and most people here played some organized sports in their life. Some perhaps started on their high school teams. So perhaps even played college ball. But I can guarantee you that NOT ONE of us ever was tried like the massiah from day one. Given everything for anyone upon just the simple motion. That changes a persons mentality. I saw it first hand with Mike Miller who had good family to ground him but he was far from grounded by the time he made it to the NBA.
