Their third best team would be an eighth seed in the West, which is again, a common narrative year after year after year in the East, so much so, as stated, that Adam Silver is finally hinting an realignment possibilities.

50+ games into the season and you are asking that question? Somehow that makes it a good bet when they have won 11 of 13 (but the thread was dead silent when they were losing to the pistons by 20+ and were on a long losing streak).
The point is this: it will pay ZERO dollars and there will be a very very small minority of bettors who will or even could hedge out, despite the theory that it's a +EV bet.
They need to WIN IT ALL for those people.. For the majority of $100 bettors. That will not happen.

Even if they don't deserve it, Cavs will likely be favorites in every postseason series until the NBA Finals (maybe not the EC finals where it could be pick), so there will be great hedging opportunites for Cavs punters.

What you don't understand is that the Knicks were a "great" bet that happened not to win. While the Cavs were always a horrible bet. The OP only makes "great" bets and if they don't win it was just bad luck.

Of course, I'd put $10,000 on 30-1 today AFTER I KNOW THEY HAVE LEBRON and LOVE and hedge out. The 30-1 tickets were purchased without that foreknowledge so it's a moot point.
But the average $100 bettor will not hedge out (typically, they 'let it ride' right to the finish line), hence, they will NOT make any money, hence, the 30-1 tickets Vegas has on the line will make them money in the end.
Write it down.

IL, has anyone hedged out yet? Do you think they have? Let's hear it. Answer that question. NO ONE has made ANY money off this futures bet.
And I'll continue to ask it as the season goes on and show you why hedging is not practical in many situations, hence, if they don't win it all, it's all

Every postseason series is JUST two series in your scenario.
Are you going to hedge out of the first round against the bottom of the East? No.
Are you going to hedge out of the second round against a team like the Wizards? It's unlikely.
So you just eliminated the two great hedging opportunities for what, two poor ones. That's not great by any stretch.
