When you think about it oh for the persception of what the Orioles are doing right now, that extra $3 million is irrelevant. To field a team that plays .500 will go a million miles for the young players like Markakis, Roberts, etc...to finally play on a winning team, for the fans, it is a great move...it is a great signing and I could care less about the 5M vs. 8M....there was so much more at stake this season for the Orioles franchise than $3......you through a lineup that has Weiters, Jones, Hardy batting at your bottom.
We are going to have a great line up this year, depth in the bullpen and young pitching...I've said this before, I am sure the rotation will go through their down times, but they do have major league ready pitchers right now and it is clear - we will out score you.

It is very relevant. McPhail has already said that they had gone over their projected budget before they signed Vlad.
Now they are looking at a payroll in the $87-94 range depending on the Vlad contract and Guthrie/Luke/Duke contracts.
If they had gone over their budget then that can have a ripple effect to the draft and international signings. This year's draft is the deepest/most talent packed draft in recent memory. There are players who will be around in the 2nd/3rd rounds who would have been 1st round picks in past drafts. This is one of the best draft classes in history (from talent and depth standpoint).
The same can be said about hte international class. Rumors say it will be one of the strongest FA international signing classes over the past 10 years. For $3mm you can sign a bunch of international talent and spend on the draft to infuse the farm system with talent by paying overslot money. Those investments help the franchise more and help long term rather than Vlad who is a 1 year player.

Apparently Vlad will make $5mm this year and the other $3mm will be deferred to several years down the road.
So I guess the O's gave him $8mm rather than an incentive based contract and part of that agreement is that a portion would be deferred to several years down the road.
This makes sense cause it allows the O's to still spend and have the resources for draft picks and other moves.

Thats good they were able to defer $3M. I would never want for hte Orioles to miss out on opportunities for future growth but I think Angelos decided to open his pockets this year. They want to win now...they didn't sign Vlad, Lee, and Reynolds to fill a roster void.
Baltimore's market potential is alot greater than your typicall cellar dweller team...one good season and the Orioles will be back to their mid 90s teams. and then your budget gets bigger because you are generating more revenue than usual.
