Yes, it does seem strange that a city with over 83% black people wouldn’t have any black people in it.

People laughing at how stupid you are doesn’t mean you’ve won. You win by making an ad that leads to someone buying your product or leads to that person convincing someone else to buy it.
And it’s not the “urban feel” that turns people off. It’s the “third world country feel” that turns them off.
I guess the Lions and the Tigers should just give up and find new homes for their teams. Or maybe it's a good time for Chrysler to tap into their success and the sense of pride that helps bring. And maybe the whole phoenix rising theme is lost on some folks who want everything to look like some idealized America, ala Mayberry RFD.
As I said before, the ad didn't work on you. So what? Sales look pretty good.

Correct me if i'm wrong, they are trying to sell cars, not Detriot. And i believe they are doing fairly well.
They filed for bankruptcy and needed $50,000,000,000.00 from the government just so they could keep their company running.

Detroit, yes. Baghdad, no.
I'm curious to know where you went? Yes there are horrible parts of Detroit. But there are also nice parts of Detroit as well. It's kind of like most other major metropolitan areas in America. I know it gets a bad stigma from usually being at the top of some Yahoo or MSN poll on America's most dangerous cities.
Metro Detroit is basically divided into two parts, the city of Detroit itself and the suburbs. It sounds simple and dumb but the difference is night and day between the two. The city is comprised of almost all African Americans while the suburbs is pretty much the opposite. Most of the fans you see at Tigers games and Lions games are coming in from the suburbs.
While I agree that parts of the city are awful, not all of it is, especially if you expand it out into the suburbs where it gets pretty nice. Even areas right outside of Detroit, such as Gross Pointe, can be very nice. My point is I believe it's like any other major American city, some nice parts, some shitty parts. I guess it's just your personal opinion as to whether you like it or not. I drove thru Montana once and I basically said the same thing about Montana. I would never go back if I didn't have to. It doesn't mean Montana isn't a nice place to some people though. Only difference is Montana isn't in the middle of the American sporting arena with a playoff Baseball team(well, until last night), a currently successfull Football team, the best Hockey organization in the sport, and two top 25 college fooball teams.
As someone who grew up in Detroit I have noticed a sense of "hate" and resentment towards Detroit now that the Lions aren't a punching bag and the Tigers made the playoffs. Before it was kind of rare for Detroit to be at the fore front of a bunch of Covers threads.

Then maybe they can afford to pay back those 50 BILLION tax dollars they took from the government to keep their failed business running.
Due to your unrelenting fanatical defense of Detroit it is pretty obvious you live there.
You should heed what Leafs said: “I live right next to Detroit. It is the biggest shithole you could ever imagine. You can’t defend this pile of rubble.”
However, feel free to rant and rave about how the worst city in the country is actually a great place. Just know you would come off as foolish as a Miami Dolphins fan claiming they have a good shot at winning the Super Bowl this season.

I lived next to Windsor until I was 20. Outside of Oulette Street and all the bars on it and Casino Windsor(now Ceasars I believe) I couldn't tell you shit about it.

New York has plenty of shitty areas. I watched a J-Lo car commercial the other day. They have banks that took billions in government bailouts and used some of that money to give bonuses to the executives that fucked it all up. Why aren't you bashing New York?

I went there for a college friend’s wedding and while the ceremony and reception appeared to be in decent areas (for Detroit anyway) driving around the vast majority of Detroit felt like I was in a post-apocalyptic America.
And it’s not just that Detroit is the most violent city in the country.
Detroit public schools have a graduation rate around 25%.
Detroit unemployment is 30%.
Almost 50% of the children in Detroit live below the poverty line.
Almost 50% of the adults in Detroit are functionally illiterate.
And trust me: people thinking Detroit is a shithole is not because people are jealous of the Lions or the Tigers (especially after last night’s game).

I am no fan of New York City, but Detroit is easily the biggest shithole in the country and NYC, statistically, isn’t even close.

No one said Detroit is a paradise. It's hell. That's the point of the ads, genius. It's a city that failed, but is trying to make a comeback. Getting a second chance is classic storytelling, and as American as apple pie...and Chevys.
To your point that the advertising isn't working -- sales are up. Good for them. The fact that you're all worked up and on a rant about a stupid freaking ad indicates to me that the agency made a smart choice.

This is where were differing in our opinions. I consider Metro Detroit to be Detroit and it's surrounding suburbs. I agree the city of Detroit is a hot mess, but when you encompass all of Metro Detroit the stats start to level off. It would be the equivalent of finding the worst area of Los Angeles and using those stats as a representation of all of Greater Los Angeles.
I just find it interesting that I'm seeing a number of threads on Covers pertaining to Detroit recently. These car commercials have been on t.v. since last years Super Bowl. But the threads have been popping up more often with the Tigers in the playoffs, the Lions doing well and being on Monday Night Football finally. I'm not saying anyone is jealous but when Detroit wasn't receiving the national exposure on the sporting scene, people could care less about Detroit.

I would consider Metro Detroit to be Wayne County, Oakland County, and Macomb County. Most of each of these counties is within a 45 minute drive of Downtown Detroit. This is where most of the people who attend sporting events downtown come from. 3.8 million people of the states 9.8 million people come from these counties with 700,000 actually coming from the City of Detroit.
I would say 700,000 of roughly 3.8 million, which is what I would consider to be Metro Detroit, would be a small sample size. We wouldn't say L.A. is an awful city because of Watts or Inglewood(I'm sorry to stereotype and single out those two cities but I can't think of anything better off of the top of my head).

All major cities would have better stats if you included all the surrounding suburbs. That’s no defense for half the children in Detroit living below the poverty line or half the adults in Detroit being functionally illiterate. Not to mention being the most dangerous city in the country.

You could throw 50,000,000,000.00 tax payer dollars at pretty much any company and they would be doing well. It doesn’t mean they are are/were running a good business.
I do agree with your last thought though. ![]()
