yes, because americans don't know what's good for them, thus need laws to tell them.  just as children need adults, adults need the government--no difference.

It's never mattered who you voted for. Presidents are selected not elected.

its always interesting to me how certain groups of people are for more personal choices, rights and freedoms for americans...

while other groups of people are hell bent on trying to intrusively use government to limit, take away, regulate, control, track and strip americans of personal choices, rights and freedoms

Just curious... where are you from?

Could you give me an example of a law that's in place to protect Americans?

With all due respect, you're way off base.  The laws exist because of many reasons, none of which have anything to do with protecting the citizens because they don't know what's "good" for them.  Besides, the people making the laws do not care what is good for the people.  To think otherwise is foolish.

the more rules made and laws passed, more likely there will be citizen indifference and disobedience, its the wrong approach.

go to somewhere like amsterdam where all the vices in life are "tolerated", you barely even seen any police or crimes being committed, if you take off the constraints, people will respond in kind.

The seat belt law wasn't put in place to protect us.  It was put in place to make it easy for the local governments to cash in on violations.

All that, plus you missed the most glaring one - Lawsuits.....

When you can sue for millions AND WIN because your McDonald's coffee was too hot, or you get hurt robbing someone's home by getting stuck in their chimney, that's the reason we live in a "Police State" - and the reason there's directions on a bottle of shampoo......

And you better not disagree with my point of view, or

     I'll SUE YOUR A$$!!!!!!!

    The SEAT BELT LAW........

WHY? .....a federal law was passed requiring AM to install AIR BAGS.......by 1990 or so

The AM said.....WTF?....this is gonna be way too expensive

SO.....Sec of Trans. Elizabeth Dole said..........OK...if you POS can get 2/3 of state legislatures to pass SEAT BELT LAWS.....I'll back off the air bag requirement........

93 MILLION DOLLARS (of lobbying) LATER .......POOF!.....our politicians dearly care for our safety...and just want to make our roads safer!.............

*why is it seemingly always Texas.............?

About 10 yrs ago.....I got a ticket for no SB by a state trooper
*making (around) 6 figures / writing SB tickets wtf

As I passed thru a toll-gate /  reaching into my pockets....he nailed me as I was reaching to put my SB back on...still by toll booth/motionless........ THEN >>
*he lost the ticket / I demanded to pay it anyway (didn't want to worry about it).....they refused ......2 years later I was stopped > thrown in JAIL for about 7-8 hours....(warrant for my arrest due to unpaid ticket).....$650 cash later......I was a free man....they even let me have my car back! .....($300)......Thanks Texas!....Thanks America!............................................

there's directions on a bottle of shampoo........

    .................sorry missed this

THIS happens to be my default argument closer..........
*how many times do you shampoo your hair?

Regrettably.....every chick I've dated follows those directions........why?.....because "um THEY know what's best for me!".....rolling their eyes
"errr......damm baby did you ever consider the shampoo lasts half as long?..... also stripping your hair of the natural oils?.....then requiring a conditioner?
      *"um......you're just cynical !!!".......

    To protect us/to help us...

    same thing

The laws aren't put in place to do either.

The lawmakers do not make laws on the premise that we need help.  They do not make laws on the premise that we don't know what's good for us.

I asked for one example of a law that was put in place because "we don't know what's good for us", and all I got back was "you just proved my point."

    Great argument.

Let me know when you think of one.
