I saw a movie that everyone should see. It changed me, and kicked me in to gear.
It is called "the cove", and I am shocked, and embarassed at what I saw, and that I had no idea this was going on.
It is about the Japanese slaughter of DOLPHINS and PORPOISES. Not the fish, but the mamals. I thought that these animals were totally safe, but should have guessed that someone somewhere would be killing these highly intelligent seemingly enemy-less animals. The Japanese kill an estimated 23,000 per year for meat, and they do it in the most brutal way.
They herd them up, and stab them, and slice their throats - and you see them struggling for their last breaths. It is horrifying.
I encourage anyone who is interested to get involved, see the movie, read the article - but most of all TELL SOMEONE ABOUT IT. The reason this is happening is that most dont know about it - even the japanese citizens themselves.
The movie is great - in spite of the subject matter.
I have been sick since I saw it, but am glad I am.

Good thread, I actually bothered reading it all...First I have to say I didnt see the movie, but I agree with what ragingstorm had to say. Different cultures eat different things. I once worked with a guy from China who thought north americans were crazy for not eating dogs.
As far as the cruelty part, well I been around farms all my life and seen some slaughterhouses and all that, and the cruelty part is often exaggerated by vegans or similar people on a mission trying to drive home a point on different films by peta, liberal bleeding hearts type etc. Not saying cruelty never happens but I wouldnt say its typical of the industry (as if after madcow disease, it would welcome all the more bad press). Like the guy that said cows are hung up alive then have their throats slashed, thats not true. The cows are killed before, they have that 'sweet spot' on the forehead and it kills them instantly. The less stress an animal has when its killed the better the meat will be, I guess the japanese could do better in that respect.
