I saw a movie that everyone should see. It changed me, and kicked me in to gear.
It is called "the cove", and I am shocked, and embarassed at what I saw, and that I had no idea this was going on.
It is about the Japanese slaughter of DOLPHINS and PORPOISES. Not the fish, but the mamals. I thought that these animals were totally safe, but should have guessed that someone somewhere would be killing these highly intelligent seemingly enemy-less animals. The Japanese kill an estimated 23,000 per year for meat, and they do it in the most brutal way.
They herd them up, and stab them, and slice their throats - and you see them struggling for their last breaths. It is horrifying.
I encourage anyone who is interested to get involved, see the movie, read the article - but most of all TELL SOMEONE ABOUT IT. The reason this is happening is that most dont know about it - even the japanese citizens themselves.
The movie is great - in spite of the subject matter.
I have been sick since I saw it, but am glad I am.

Not to get all high and mighty on everyone but how do you think the rest of what you guys eat is made? Do you think they give the cows, pigs ,chickens etc sleeping gas and put them to sleep for you? No they herd them up hang them and slice their throats while they thrash around and then they bleed out.
People that eat Shark Fin soup , they catch the shark, cut off its fin and throw them back in the water
I am a Vegan because of all of this shit.

Im sure before you turned vegan you ate beef, chicken , fish etc. right ? So im pretty sure you liked the taste right? Ok. So now what ive always wanted to know was what does it matter if you dont eat it? Will cows be saved? Will chickens be turned into pets because of you? You becoming a vegan will not save a single animal, so why not just eat something you like the taste of?
Yes I know...if everyone thought like you alot of animals would be saved, but they dont. No one cares what NJDEVILS the vegan from vegas does......just curious....

It seems that killing an animal is the same whether you kill a bug or kill a dophin. They are the same?
Is killing a chicken the same as killing an elephant? Is killing a beetle the same as killing a horse?
Sorry, but right or wrong - I have a hierarchy of importance of life and death - and on my scale a dolphin is more of an outrage to kill than a fish, and comparing the two equally is not much of an argument.
Either way - I challenge anyone to go see this movie - and even with your personal hatred of me - walk out not being moved.

I'm sure Vanzack will find some clever way to shoot down my theory......
But I saw this, and found it interesting and definitely somewhat disturbing, but I personally could not buy into the overall message of the film for the following reason:
Every single counter-argument that could be made against the film-makers point is inarticulate and muddled. There is not one SINGLE interview or segment in this film where any of the dolphin fisherman are given a chance to articulate why they do what they do. They are presented as aggressive close-minded brutes in the few scenes they are shown. And while it may seem illogical to think that ANY good arguments can be made for the illicit harvesting of dolphins, these men are not given ANY chances to present their arguments to counter the film-makers main point.
Therefore "The Cove" loses a lot of potential effectiveness, b/c of a Michael Moore like presentation of an over-whelming amount of footage of dolphins suffering and interviews designed to hammer the point home to viewers. However like all of Michael Moores films, VERY little time or effort is given by the documentarian to present the strongest case possible for the OPPOSITION, and w/o ANY reasonable amounts of this type of footage, the film loses meaning b/c we are subjected to a completely subjective take on the whole situation, instead of having intelligent or at least reasonable counter-arguments that disagree w/ the film-makers main point inserted anywhere in the film, there are none.
So its just "Dolphins are killed.......its Bad" ad naseum for the whole film. And while this idea is obviously fairly valid, the fact that the film-maker didn't bother to get ONE SINGLE intelligent interview or bit of footage that presents a counter-argument to his point is bullshit, subjective and not what a good documentary should strive for.
Therefore this film lost major points with me. The point that Vanzack is hyping is valid, but I found the film overall to be lacking and biased.

I do it because I do not want to eat it. It disturbs me how the animals are treated and I am doing my little part and not eating them , buying leather, wool etc.. I do not want to contribute to that. I know that me doing what I am doing is not putting places out of business and not stopping other people from doing what they do. But it is a personal choice I made to not consume any animals or animal products. There is a stat that by going Vegan you "save" 187 animals a year...Not a lot in the grand scheme of things, I would think its more, but thats what I choose to do. I dont hate others or look down on anyone for eating meat , I dont get all preachy if I see people eating a ham sandwich and drinking milk.
Did I answer the question?

I watched a video on slaughter houses once and then kind of said "hey I have dogs I am pretty sure these animals feel the same fear / pain my dog that love me and that I love would feel. Why the hell am I eating them?"
Then I later cut out eggs, dairy and fish (within a few months of that) It was back in 2002

They kill the porpoises because they eat other fish.
Not sure what else these "fisherman" would tell you
Maybe they would tell you about the socio-economic conditions in their area which led to them having to pursue this line of work.
Maybe they would tell you about how much they detest what they are doing, but have to keep doing it to support their families.
Maybe they would tell you about other fishing endeavors they would rather be working on, however due to down-sizing, job relocation, or certain sectors of the fishing market shutting down, this is what they are forced to do.
Maybe they would tell you about growing up poor in isolated Japanese fishing communities, where there aren't exactly an abundance of jobs.
Maybe they would tell you about how in Japanese and Asian culture, the Dolphin isn't nearly as revered as it is in American/ Western culture, and therefore they do not consider their job to have any poor moral implications.
I'd keep going, but Sammy - you're such a retard, that it's just like talking to dirt.

Yes you answered the question but I think that 187 a year thing is purely bullshit. Do cows get killed for me personally? No. The cow would die anyway If I was vegan or not. Do slaughterhouses say, "NJdevils just turned vegan, guess we dont have to kill that cow"........In my opinion going vegan doesnt save a single animal from death. They are dying anyway whether you eat them or not. The markets are stocked with meat , fish regardless if you are a vegan or not. Nothing gets killed for noone in particular. 187 a year is a bullshit theory made by vegans.

VaugnK - glad you saw it - glad you wrote what you did - I have nothing wrong with it.
It is my opinion - that there is very little that the fisherman could say to justify it. This is Japan. It is not Equatorial Guinea. That is my opinion.
But Im glad you saw it, and I hope you tell people about it.

I'm not Cavs lover, so thanks for proving my point about you being dumb.
Also your response to NJDevils "187 animals per year" theory is also quiet moronic as well.
Anyway, you've proven my point, I'm not gonna dumb myself down to your level to even aknowledge you anymore. I sincerely doubt whether you ever had a formal college education.
And as for what I wrote above:
Maybe they would tell you about how much they detest what they are doing, but have to keep doing it to support their families.
I fail to see how that is not a feasible point.
