Again those are your words...Drugs are not victimless, they cause great harm to people through violence and physical and psychological self-destruction and ultimately cause grave damage to societies whose populations that embrace them...
Guns cause great harm to people through violence and physical destruction and ultimately cause grave damage to societies whose population embrace them... yet you guys still love your guns. The classic rebuttal is that guns don't kill people, people kill people. Well it's the same for drugs, drugs aren't killing anyone but the user.
I personally think drugs are awful and in general, lead people down the wrong paths. However, there are millions and millions of people out there who use recreational drugs without any issue and I (nor any other person or government) should have the right to tell them what to do or how to live. Besides, governments telling us not to do something innately innocent by threat of force isn't teaching us anything except to resent that governance. Governments should rather teach and educate it's population as to why drugs are bad but ultimately leave the final decision to the individual.
What separates cigarettes or alcohol from the illegal drugs? Chemically, they are so very similar, it's outrageous to pick and choose which are ok and which are not. I know a friend who smokes marijuana all the time and has no problem with it... give him a cigarette and he can barely walk and doesn't trust himself to drive. Everyone is different and there's no way any government can account for all our differences so why try? Why not leave personal decisions to the individual who is obviously in the best position to make such decisions?
Self-responsibility and accountability are things we need to reinvest in instead of investing in more governance.
