Marcus Stokes was looking at going to Penn State or Florida (I think he committed to both, but I'm not sure which one first) before a video surfaced of him singing the N word in a song. That made him untouchable to major programs. He went and played at West Florida for 2-3 years and is now getting his chance at the next level.
Huff took over a 1-11 Golden Eagles team and had them 7-5 in his first year. He took over for Doc Holliday when he stepped down from Marshall after the Covid season. He produced winning seasons 3 out of the 4 years, ending with a 10-2 record in 2024. The guy has a track record of stepping in and getting the most out of what he has. He brought in some players as well. J'Mond Tapp was a 4 star edge who signed with Texas back in 2022. Mike Montgomery was Huff's 2nd leading tackler at Southern Miss. I think he also has a good haul of dudes from P4 programs looking for playing time. WR Stonka Burnside came over from Mississippi State, RB Manny Covey from Cincinnati, WR Jemyri Davis from Kansas State, DL Elijah Kinsler from West Virginia; all are players who came over to Memphis without a ton of playing time at their previous programs.
Getting players who are hungry to compete is key, and so far it looks like they did a good job of finding them and letting the best ones win the job. Many thought Air Noland was going to win the QB job so when Huff named Stokes the starter, most were surprised. I took that decision as a pretty good sign that Stokes knows the offense better and has shown his floor ain't too low to cause concern with his coaches.
