I have to ask though- there are obviously times, like you stated, that talent gets trumped.. ala. UGA vs Colorado, UGA vs. UCF last season..

what makes you think that just because UGA has superior talent, obviously true, this UGA team has what it takes to knock out a good, overall top 10 or so team?

Remember, UGA's only wins last year:

    • Louisiana Lafayette
    • Tennessee
    • Vandy
    • Kentucky
    • Idaho State
    • Georgia Tech

So it's safe to say, UGA really didn't 'wow' anybody with any of their wins last year..

Now, take out UGA's best WR, no depth at RB, no depth at OL and a D that had major issues last year- I don't care how much talent you have, and this speaks really to coaching, or lack theirof- but I'm not sure how anyone can take UGA in this game and feel confident outside of stating- yea, UGA has more talent, that's why they will win..

    I'll address your post seriatim.

    Thanks for your input SNF.

I addressed your second paragraph in my second post.

I don't think Boise is a top 10 team.  I have been very consistent in saying that.  In fact I have said until they play a legitmate DI schedule, they should be barred from appearing in the top 10.  To do otherwise completely negates strength of schedule as a factor, and makes a makes a mockery of college football.

I addessed your 4th paragraph in my second post.

I agree that Georgia didn't wow anyone last season.  That has virtually nothing to do with this season however.

I agree that Georgia has depth issues at RB and OL, but I don't think those depth issues will hurt them much in the first game of the season.  Lack of depth usually becomes more of a factor as the season wears on.  Georgia has more depth at WR than Boise does.  Football games are usually won by the more talented team, and unless Georgia has a Virginia Tech-type meltdown, they should win this game comfortably.  I am very confident in my belief that whatever advantages Boise's may have in this matchup, it won't be nearly enough to overcome their talent deficiency.

Boise has never shown any capability to hang with a SEC team, or generate any offense against a SEC defens.  There is a reason for that, and it called talent disparity.  Nothing will change in this game.  Boise will lose, and you will lose your money . . . plain and simple.

they have struggles mightily against SEC (I actually did not realize they have struggled so much).  My skepticism is more due to the fact that Georgia has been less than impressive recently.

Either it was a good write up and it is def a game that I am looking forward to.

    FYI,
    For those interested.

The new strength and nutrition program are working.

Since the spring of 2010 the Bulldogs have gained over 500 pounds in their starting lineup. Combine this with the fact that many players on the team are saying that they are all getting leaner, and the Bulldogs may look like a different team in 2011.

Some players have gained as much as 28 pounds in one calendar year. In all, 11 players have gained more than 20 pounds of muscle weight and 23 total players have gained more than 10 pounds of muscle.

Some players, like Alec Ogletree, gained weight to fill the middle linebacker position. Ogletree gained 26 pounds since the spring of 2010 to get to 236 pounds. Shawn Williams gained 25 pounds to fill a safety spot, and Richard Samuel gained 21 to play linebacker but he will now carry his 240 pounds over to the running back position.

Four of UGA's starting offensive lineman are over 315 pounds, and three of them are more than 325 pounds. UGA's average starting nose tackle went from 317 pounds in 2010 to over 340 pounds in 2011.

The Bulldogs will also have a very intimidating set of defensive ends in DeAngelo Tyson and Abry Jones, as both players are nearing 310 pounds and have exceptional athletic ability.

Kwame Geathers has been mentioned as having a goal weight of more than 360 pounds but I would think that may come with a loss of speed. Incoming transfer John Jenkins currently weighs 345 pounds and was recently clocked running a 40-yard dash in under five seconds.

The Bulldogs also have two players with tight end experience that now weigh over 270 pounds in Arthur Lynch and Bruce Figgins. Marlon Brown has bulked up to 222 pounds since last spring and Michael Bennett has gained 22 pounds and he is now up to 208. Orson Charles, Tavares King, and Rontavious Wooten have both gained over ten pounds adding bulk to an already bulky receiving corps.

Even the kickers have joined in and combined they have gained 18 pounds. Drew Butler is now a sturdy 215 pounds.

A freshman of note, Zach DeBell gained 25 pounds since his recruitment and is now up to a very healthy 290 pounds. He has maintained his speed and strength while gaining all the weight.

Only a few player lost weight and the ones that did so, did so intentionally. Carlton Thomas who was already light on his feet has dropped 17 pounds since last spring, bringing his total weight down to 163 pounds. Watts Dantzler has also made huge strides by getting in much better shape and by losing 15 pounds and gaining muscle, look for Dantzler to see the field this year if he continues to progress.

I do not expect the extra weight to help the Bulldogs too much, but I do expect it to hinder other teams as the Bulldogs will be much harder to block or pancake with all of that added weight.

    FYI,
    For those interested.

Drew Butler is now a sturdy 215 pounds.

almost forgot about this awesome thread....

GENIUS stuff here....yet another talent argument done so stylishly....most forgot what we were even talking about.....

the point of debate is/was not.....as a dog ....is Georgia nice value here?.....sure they might be

prediction was..... Boise is gonna get their ass kicked (2-3 TD's) simply because Georgia has more talent......PERIOD
          * the ONLY way to illustrate this would be to compare Georgia.....to the teams Boise has handled already....Hokies.....Ducks...Frogs...Beavs..Sooners...(not to Boise AGAIN.....no shit once again opponent has better athletes)

because that is essentially the argument....> that Georgia has talent far and above what Boise has seen before..... so....THIS time...things will be different!
*oh wait I forgot Boise hasn't shown the ability to overcome anyway......................

ALSO.....using recruiting rankings without mentioning other factors.....is of course a flawed way to view this.....> team is ranked low so MUST have inferior players....

*can you get players in their best position / role?
        * Patterson at TCU if wanting a TE for example....will look for a QB maybe to convert....many DL guys for him were RB's in high school.....so of course TCU will be ranked much lower than they should (maybe 99th RB becomes top 5 DE as a senior)

    * how much do you coach em up?.....once you get em  ...
some schools players just don't seem to get any better

*rankings often reflect simply how many of the the top teams like a prospect .....Texas and Bama like them? .....they MUST be pretty good

Boise only got maybe 3 or 4  guys the last 8 years.....that would a 3 star (outta 5) recruit.....
how many Broncos on NFL rosters ?......20 or so
*WOW....a lot of 2 star guys make it to the pro's?......

tough to measure.....but I would guess the level of improvement a recruit has ...from the time he enters school....to the time he leaves....would be significantly higher at Boise than many...

    EXAMPLE >
Steele ranks each player outta high school ......from an average of 10 services or so...(PS # in his magazine)
starting player rankings by position >.
    Boise OL      248...232...213...210...316
    Ga OL           36...12...213...34...60
       * meaning Boise LT was the 248th best OL outta high school...Ga LT the 36th best
    BUT......Steele ranks Boise as 24th best OL.....Georgia 39th.................WTF?

    DL?
    Boise     268...365...121...39
    Ga          3...5...24
    Steele says Boise 6th best...Georgia 8th....

    LB's?
    Boise     72...30...124
    Ga          23...5...64...16
    Steele has Broncos #24....Dawgs #29

    individual stuff.....
Boise OT Nate Potter (248th outta high school)....now the 2nd best OT in college football according to Steele.....RB Doug Martin (297!.....#9 now).....DT Billy Winn (121......now #4)
*** YES.....I know Steele is not the last word on this stuff....simply a food for thought kinda thing....

This is the type of critical analysis that adds to a debate.

Not the same ole -- well this team plays in the SEC and therefore are guaranteed to win type of argument that is almost solely based on opinion.

And Jimmydafreak do not take that personally because about 99% of the people here do the same thing - myself included.

anyways such debates are kind of moot anyway because the bottom line is that the game will eventually be played and we will know the answer soon enough.

I really think UGA has a favorable schedule.  They don't play Alabama, Arkansas, or LSU.

Boise St  (really a home game)
    S. Carolina (home)
    C.Carolina (home)
    Ole Miss  (Away)
    Miss St  (Home)
    Tennessee (Away)
    Vandy   (Away)
    Florida ( Jacksonville)
    New Mexico St  (Home)
    Auburn (Home)
    Kentucky (Home)
    Ga. Tech (Away)

The hardest SEC teams UGA plays are at home (S.Carolina, Miss St. and Auburn) of course there is always Florida in Jacksonville. but I think it is a very favorable schedule.

Yes I am a homer but I can see the Dawgs going 4-0 to start the season and I have that feeling the Tenn will get them.  I think we will have a good chance to finish 11-1 or 10-2.  I really think UGA will get Florida this year.

The first game in the dome will be sea of RED and BLACK.  The Dome holds 71,228 and UGA sold 53,522 Boise st sold 7,500 and the rest goes to Chick-fil-a people.

Starting 4-0 might be little optimistic.. 3-1 would be excellent start..

With that said, think 5-3 wins the SEC East so 8-4 or 9-3 seems about right and agree, the overall UGA schedule is VERY easy.. toughest road game @ Tennessee.. could be favored in every game outside Boise (still could be)..

someone needs to save all this for October and bump it again.. I will bet right now that UGA does not start 4-0 and will give anyone (+250) to be against me on that..

The Dome holds 71,228 and UGA sold 53,522 Boise st sold 7,500 and the rest goes to Chick-fil-a people.

someone needs to save all this for October and bump it again.. I will bet right now that UGA does not start 4-0 and will give anyone (+250) to be against me on that..

What a steal...+250 for them to win all four games, when they'll be slight dogs in two of them and a slight fave in another

their is usually always a talent gap when boise state plays one of the BCS big boys..but that gap is not as wide as the gap that boise state has on its BCS opponent in the coaching and heart department.....bottom line

Alright this might have already been said but I didnt wanna read this anymore lol.  Lets look at the first couple of games that UGA played last year with there WR AJ Green out, what did they win 1 game??? Now lets look at there run game last year with a very experienced OLINE (I think it was ranked 1 in SEC) and a very experienced RB and still cant run the ball to save there life.  Now lets look at there offense this year, they have WR that are known for dropping passes, they have 2 returning starters on the OLINE and they are down to there 4th RB in the true freshman.  They have a good young QB that will continue to grow through out his years at UGA but besided that one point what does there offense have to offer.  There OLINE will have there hands full with some of the best DLINE man in the country.

Now lets talk about there stellar 3-4 defense they have now all because of some JUNCO transfer that weighs 340 lol hahaha.  He went to JUNCO for one of three reasons: 1. He wasnt good enough to play ball 2. Wasnt smart enough to pass his classes or 3. The combination of both.  Just because we see one or two good junco transfers a year in college football does not always mean that this one will be a beast.  Now he could shut my ass up and tear it up but I will take my chances.  I also like that fact that UGAs 3-4 is talked about in the same sentence as BAMAs 3-4 defense lol hahaha this is just funny to me.  I will take the better qb the better defense and the overall better team in BOISE ST

Tony Manero has a good point that Georgia was only able to beat these average teams, losing to all of the better teams on their schedule in 2010. And now they are without their best WR and RB

Hard to say they are a better team this year,

I think its fair to say that Boise is better than all of those teams combined.  This game makes or breaks the season for Boise where Georgia has to be more concerned with the match up with South Carolina

at 1st  ....I was like who TF is Tony M ?....

and they played poorly in a few of those...
just hammered by GT and b/u QB....
         32 to 18 1st downs.....512 to 425 TO (411 rushing).....38 to 22 min TOP.....GT ran 92 plays !.....but 4 nasty TO's

Kentucky also handed Dawgs the game....outgaining UG 423 to 290 (must have been that rock solid Wildcat D)....22 to 13 FD....but another 4 TO's by UK.....

caught Vols off UGLY LSU loss.....3 TO's got them down early.....before VOL QB switch also
It is better to be feared - than to be loved.

You say football is the ultimate team game...right? Jimmy, no other team in the country year in and year out proves that fact to be more true than Boise S.T.

You say Georgia has far superior talent across the board...right? Well, ask that to Oklahoma, Oregon, Virginia Tech, TCU...Etc,Etc.  You know what makes that statement more true that anything anyone can debate??? Boise beat all of them. Not like Appalachian S.T beating Michigan. Boise does it EVERY TIME there number is called upon.

Recruiting is bloodline of college football... right? Your correct, it is. But like myself you know that rivals and other groups giving these kids star ratings doesn't mean shit. You know how I know that? Kellen Moore was a one star " recruit ".... Hell, Gaines Adams want even given a scholarship to play at Clemson when he first came... he had to in roll as a walk on. I could go on and on with this stuff, by that's not here nor there. My point is, look at the entire team for Boise S.T.... there coach hand picked these kids to fit what he thinks a winning formula. That's what " recruiting " is, not what rivals says.

But like I have said many times...... When Boise beats Georgia it will an EXCUSE to WHY THEY DID. It wont be because they lined up and punished them. It will be an EXCUSE to WHY.

Jimmy you and I see eye to eye on everything but this subject and for whatever I cant understand why. What I do know is that every time I say Boise will perform on the big stage............they haven't ever let me down.

Football is about a lot of things.....and IMO, Boise is good at all of them.

no feed back here jimmy..... Do I not bring up good points?

BTW..... Get your ass into the season challenge

There are so many reasons why UGA will be better this year.  The players that UGA lost were in fact good/great players but as funny as this sounds they were cancers on that team.
Justin Houston -- great DE but had attitude problems and with work ethic. (reason why he fell in the draft)
AJ Green -- Great WR probably the best UGA will ever have but he was a me player and his only concern was the NFL.
Washaun Ealey - Attitude/work ethic/in trouble all the time and could not hold on to the football to save his life. He cost UGA the Arkansas (fantom block w less than 1 min in the game), S.Carolina (fumble at the 2 yard line in the 4th Qtr), and the Miss St. game (fumbled on the goal line).
Biggest loss for UGA in my opinion is Kris Durham WR and C.King RB just because he was a better than average blocker on passing downs.

I agree that UGA has some depth issues but I don't think they will be a problem in the first couple of games in the season.  My only concern early on will be the RB situation.

The D-fense will be vastly improved with another year of the 3-4 under there belt.  UGA's big issue last year was they didn't have that big body in the middle to stop the run.  This year they have 2 340 plus bodies in the middle to stop the run and the NG last year is moving to DE.  As far as one of those big bodies being a JUCO transfer does not mean he wasn't good enough to get a scholly out of high school (grades).  Everything being said about Jenkins is that he was better than T. Cody.  Now I don't know if that is true but I would like to think that he can at least do his job and plug the middle.  If so UGA's defense will be so much better.

CMR knows his job is on the line.  There have been big changes in the program from last year and one of them being the new S&C coach. UGA was in every game last year but they lost in the 4th QTR.  Also, might I add there have been no arrest during the offseason in which has plagued UGA over the last several years.  This team is going into this year with no superstars and I love that in a team sport.  They just need to find there leaders in which I'm sure they already have.
