Football is the ultimate team game, and there are many variables to consider when attempting to gauge the relative strength of one team versus another.  Some important factors include coaching, overall talent, motivation, experience, injuries and home field advantage.  Because there are so many variables, we sometimes see a team with an obvious talent deficiency beat a team with superior talent; Appalachian State beating Michigan a few years ago is a good example.  And while we know that pretty much any team can beat another on almost any given day, teams with the most talent usually win.  That’s why the teams that are perceived to have the better talent are usually laying points to the teams that are perceived to have lesser talent.

We can see this very clearly by simply looking at the recent BCS national champions.  What do Auburn, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma & USC have in common?  All of them are pulling top 10 (and many times top 5) recruiting classes virtually every year.

Why do we not see BCS national champions coming from conferences like the Big East and ACC?  Because the teams in those leagues are not pulling the kind of talent it takes to reach the apex of college football.  They are not pulling top 10 and top 5 recruiting classes.

Let’s take a quick glimpse at last year’s ACC Champion Virginia Tech.  The Hokies are a well-coached and well-run organization, but they never seem to be able to rise to the pinnacle of college football.  Why?  The main reason is that they simply don’t have the talent necessary to achieve that level of success.  For example VT’s last 5 recruiting classes ranked 33rd, 23rd, 23rd, 18th & 29th nationally for an average ranking of 25.2.  Juxtapose that with a team like Alabama whose last 5 recruiting rankings are 1, 5, 1, 1 & 10 for an average of 3.4.  That’s why when these two teams squared off in the opening game a couple of years ago, I said that Bama would win and cover (despite starting a green QB).  I said that Bama had superior talent across the board, and therefore VT would not hang with Bama for 4 quarters.  In the end, that is exactly how it played out.

Every single coach in the country understands that recruiting is the lifeblood of their program.  They understand that recruiting better talent is the quickest way to achieve greater success.   They know if they don’t recruit talented players, they will most likely get steamrolled by the teams that do.  And that’s why schools and coaching staffs expend so much time, energy and money to recruit the best players they can.  Do you think Cam Newton was an important recruit for Auburn?  You better believe he was.  Auburn had no chance of running the table without him, that’s for sure.  Recruiting is soooooo important that some schools and coaches are even willing devise clever ways to circumvent the rules to gain a recruiting advantage.

I’ve been following recruiting for a very long time (before it was cool to do so), and I have never seen an uglier more contentious recruiting season than this past one.  Saban even mentioned it in his National Signing Day press conference.  We may even see a coach being criminally prosecuted for the first time ever over his recruiting activities.  That’s how huge recruiting is in college football.

Georgia is another team that consistently recruits elite talent.  The reason they do so is because the state of Georgia is a hotbed for blue chip recruits, and they have very little in-state competition for those recruits.  The Atlanta metropolitan area alone has more high school football prospects than the entire state of Alabama.  That’s why Saban and other out-of-state coaches recruit Georgia so heavily.  Right now Alabama is Georgia’s biggest competition for the peach state’s top prospects.  This past recruiting season some of the nation’s top high school prospects hailed from the state of Georgia, and Richt and Saban went head-to-head on almost all of them.  4* DE Sterling Bailey, 5* RB Isaiah Crowell, 5* DE Ray Drew, 4*DB Malcolm Mitchell, 4* TE Jay Rome, and 4* OL Xzavier Ward are all Georgia blue chippers that spurned Alabama and opted to remain in-state.

To provide a little bit of perspective on these recruiting rankings, there were only 26 5* prospects in the entire country, and about another 75 4* prospects.  All of Georgia’s 15 4* and 5* recruits were ranked in the top 100 in the nation.  Pulling 15% of the top 100 prospects gave Georgia the 5th best recruiting class in the nation.  Georgia’s last 5 recruiting classes average out to an 8.4 (4 out of their last 5 recruiting classes have ranked in the top 10).  Recall that VT’s 5-year average was 25.2.

Boise State’s roster is comprise almost entirely of 2* & 3* recruits.  In the 2010 recruiting class, Boise signed their first 4* prospect ever, Tyrone Crawford out of Bakersfield, CA.  Boise has never pulled a top 50 recruiting class in their history, and their last 5 recruiting classes average out to a 67.2.  So while it’s quite clear that there is a vast difference in talent between a team like Georgia that averages an 8.4 recruiting ranking over the past 5 years versus Boise at 67.2, we know that Boise makes the most of the talent that they are blessed with.  The same cannot be said of Mark Richt and the Georgia Bulldogs.

I use to say that there was no coach in college football history that got less from his talent than Tennessee’s erstwhile coach Phillip Fulmer.  But now that he has departed, Mark Richt has assumed the crown.  Richt is the Mike Shula of the SEC East.  What I mean by that is his teams take on his personality – he’s soft and his teams are soft.  Knowledgeable Georgia fans understand this, which is why they want him out of Athens.  This also is why I issued the edict last season that I would not wager on the Dawgs the entire season.

Alabama fans and fans of other SEC teams love Richt for the same reason they use to love Shula.  With the gold mine of talent Georgia is sitting on, if they ever get their act together and hire a top-notch coach, they’ll be perennial national title contenders like Alabama is now.

The game between Boise and Georgia presents the oddest betting situation I’ve ever witnessed.  Never have I seen a road team with such a wide talent deficiency give points to a home team with such a superior level of talent.  If it has ever happened in college football before, I certainly don’t recall it, and I’ve been around a while.  Last year we had a similar situation with the VT, but the talent gap was not nearly as large in that game.

Despite Georgia’s obvious coaching handicap, I believe that the talent disparity will be too large for Boise to overcome, and that Georgia will roll to a fairly convincing double-digit win.  No doubt Boise will give a spirited effort, but in the end I don’t think they can hang with Georgia’s athletic superiority for 4 quarters.  I think Georgia’s defense will hold Kellen Moore and company in the 10-14-point range.  How much Georgia wins by will be determined by their biggest question mark – their offense.  I still believe they can pretty much match what VT did last season and score in the 30s.  I see this game as a “take Georgia and the points (or ML),” or nothing at all.  Laying points on a road dog should always be approached with trepidation, especially as here where the talent gap is so vast.

Score Prediction:  Dawgs 31, Smurfs 10

Damn.  Nice indictment of Richt.  I've avoided UGA like the plague over the past several years.  Didn't have the notes such as above to back me up, but it's never been right with them.  Never covering games they should...

Sweet analysis.  I'll have an eye on this line, no doubt.  Even if you're a Boise hater  and I am not, I can surely bet against them.

Interesting...the attitude of the "haves" and "have nots".  Damn, what I wouldn't do to hand Bill Snyder an ass-load of talent!

Although I am constantly accused of being a hater by the Boise humpers on this site, I am anything but.  I have made a ton of money on them over the years.  The last large bet I placed on them was +7 in the Fiesta Bowl versus TCU.  Easy

Richt is an abortion, but they'll have had plenty of time to get ready for this game, and the fact that it's in the Georgia Dome on national tv means the Dawgs will be plenty motivated for a big win.  If this game were sandwiched in the middle of the season somewhere I'd be less confident.

My confidence lies largely in Georgia's defense.  They finally have the personel they need to run Todd Grntham's 3-4 defense (very similar to what Saban runs at Bama).  Their most glaring weakness last season was they were soft up the gut due to not having a true 3-4 nose tackle.  They remedied that with 4* JUCO transfer John Jenkins.  That gives Kwame Geathers another year to smooth the transition from the o-line to nose.  I think we'll see Geathers primarily as a pass rusher in nickle and dime packages.

With Boise having to break in two new wide receivers against an SEC secondary that remains in tact from last season, I don't see them scoring many points in this game.  I think you'll see a huge jump in defensive productivity in Georgia's 2nd season in Gratham's system.

Also, much like what Saban went through when he arrived at Alabama, Georgia had some devsisve guys that weren't buying into what Grantham was trying to do.  With the trouble makers out of the way so to speak, I think we'll see a much more cohesive unit.

Yeah, it's really kind of unfair how much talent some of these teams are able to amass at the expensive of teams like your Wildcats.  It's really not an even playing field at all.

Great to see you posting again this season!!!  All the best to you bro!!!

Excellent.  I like the defensive angle with UGA. I may have to slap my hand all the way to "place wager" button on this one (I HATE betting for or against UGA, man!! ).  I still have lots of catching up to do before kick off...but analysis like this gets me ahead by leaps and bounds.  That's why I come here, bro.  I'll be following your posts religiously.

GREAT analysis of Richt Jimmy.  I always enjoy reading your stuff

I'm going to have a hell of a time putting my money on a team coached by Mark Richt against a team coached by Chris Petersen.  Especially since Georgia just seems to be sinking (11 wins, then 10, then 8, then 6 last year).  Are these players really going to rally around their coach and save his job?  Last year Georgia lost to Central Florida and Colorado...  are they that much better than last year?  I think they need to be...

If that write up don't convince anybody nothing will, great job.

Murray will be better this year also, there's talent there.

Good stuff Jimmy.  Excellent insight. I agree with you also re Richt.  Two other factors that come into play with him also are discipline and loyalty. Quite obvious the discipline has been lacking the last three yrs; 3rd most penalized team in the nation 08 and 09,11 arrests last year,etc.. Moreover,Grantham commented UGA was one of the weakest teams he had ever seen(hence S+C coach gone).  The players were not being held accountable(among others).
Richt's loyalty to that coach, former DC Martinez and now Bobo have been quite harmful to the program. Martinez=college roomate. Some of us feel he is too nice a guy-related to the softness you refer to. Has been some talk he has/had interest in qutting and doing missionary work.
Should be an interesting game. The line though still has me perplexed like yourself.  Looking forward to a great, fun season.  Best of luck to you.  Will be reading you regularly.

Phil Steele is projecting UGA to be the second most improved team in the nation this season.  UGA is/was a better team than last season's record indicated imo. Could we possibly have two teams at the opposite end of public perception/valuation here ? I think maybe so. Hence,I'm leaning to UGA being undervalued esp. at +2.

nice analysis jimmy, BSU's best shot is coaching advantage and QB experience, unless the UGA offense that played against UCF shows up again, BOL this season

I won't argue with you, or anyone else for that matter, that betting on Richt and against Peterson seems counter-intuitive, but I'll address that somwhat a little further down in this thread when I get a little time.

    Great write-up

I have to ask though- there are obviously times, like you stated, that talent gets trumped.. ala. UGA vs Colorado, UGA vs. UCF last season..

what makes you think that just because UGA has superior talent, obviously true, this UGA team has what it takes to knock out a good, overall top 10 or so team?

Remember, UGA's only wins last year:

    • Louisiana Lafayette
    • Tennessee
    • Vandy
    • Kentucky
    • Idaho State
    • Georgia Tech

So it's safe to say, UGA really didn't 'wow' anybody with any of their wins last year..

Now, take out UGA's best WR, no depth at RB, no depth at OL and a D that had major issues last year- I don't care how much talent you have, and this speaks really to coaching, or lack theirof- but I'm not sure how anyone can take UGA in this game and feel confident outside of stating- yea, UGA has more talent, that's why they will win..

Good write up ...............................& good counterpoints, SNF.

Had this game been sandwiched somewhere in the middle of the season, I'd give Boise a little more edge.

Let me preface this by saying, in no way do I think Boise is necessarily a slam-dunk to win this game, and I do think UGA has a legit shot to pull the upset in GA Dome.

But, I think this entire argument is out-dated and a bit ridiculous.  Say what you will about Boise having the athletically inferior team, but Peterson and the Broncos have made a living beating teams who bring in better talent over the past five years.  In that time, they've beaten Oklahoma, Oregon State twice, Oregon twice, Virginia Tech, and TCU.  Oklahoma without question brings in more talent than UGA, and while teams such as Oregon, VT, and TCU may not bring in the talent UGA does, they clearly develop their talent better than UGA does, as proven by their results on the field over the past few years.

Plain and simple, Boise is a football factory that puts a dominant product, regardless of talent, on the field every year.  Some years, not as dominant as others - but Peterson and his staff have shown they can take 2* and 3* recruits and turn them into a top 10 team on an annual basis.

UGA, on the other hand, has underachieved each of the past three seasons despite a wealth of talent.  In that time, they've lost to the following athletically inferior teams: UCF, Colorado, Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Georgia Tech.

I can definitely see your argument that Boise's OL filled with questions won't be able to handle a UGA front seven that should be dominant.  You could also argue that Boise just won't be the same offensively after losing Young, Pettis, and Avery.  Both are valid points.

But to play the talent angle, when both teams have so clearly proven that you can pretty much throw recruiting rankings and talent disparities out the window when capping their games, is just silly.  Boise is undoubtedly the better team coming into this matchup, and it will take more than a talent edge for the Dawgs to pull an upset.

the 2006 OAKlahoma (sic) Sooners.....have around EIGHTEEN players currently on NFL rosters...(including arguably the NFL's best RB)...plus few more that petered out...
          * Sooners better (prolly) than 2011 Ga...2011 Broncos better than 2006 version (prolly)

I tried to warn several clients/buddies that laying only 7 points to Boise... was not the steal it appeared to be....these include 3 that had nice very NFL careers and several more top D1 players....a total of 175K or so was lost that night...plus several pieces of furniture destroyed.....
    * these boys were afflicted with a lethal handicapping disease termed....Their-Gonna-Killem-Itis....meaning one has such a strong emotional/subjective view of a wager....that he is blind to the other side....and there is always ....another side.....as Vegas is not in the charity business

    * being primarily a match-up handicapper......I leaned to OU that night ....just as I did vs the Ducks and Hokies later.....although a southern dumbass myself.....no reason I can't overcome this when my wallet is involved.....

     * here .....athletic edges...combined with Boise losing yet another top coordinator.....Bryan Harsin to Texas (year before very sharp DC Justin Wilcox to Tennessee)....moves Boise from maybe play on to lean only...IMO

I might make small wager Boise 1H ...with lean to Ga 2H....(lost the figures....their 1H winning % ATS..... on the road....is unbelievable)....makes sense here that Dawgs maybe start slow...(size / speed edge takes over 2H?)....  I have been told by players and coaches....that Broncos are much faster ....and bigger/stronger than they expected....O and D schemes very unpredictable and sophisticated......

    * Motivation ?....
remember there are degrees of MO.....that we are not conscious of..
SURE Dawgs are motivated....just like Bama was vs Utah...you think they WANTED to lose....and take untold abuse from Saban the entire off-season??

it would be like if I said I will hand over $100K to anyone that picked this game correctly.....vs ....if I said I will smash one of your nuts with a ball-peen hammer if you are wrong ....you're GONNA work a little bit harder now aren't you?...

Richt being a dumbazz.... certainly contributes to Boise being favored here sure....actual reason is as I mentioned earlier.....is because Vegas is losing too much money.....they cannot seem to set lines high enough in Boise games.....HOW.....some of you boys can't understand this is BEYOND me...."they are not overachievers > just product of weak schedule".....type silliness....

last 21 away games......a dime (risk) player netted $11,300 investing on Boise...Vegas is now saying....go ahead > I double dog dare you...the hook is clearly set....with apparent  great steak/lobster .....or hot piece of ass dangling...had enough of both myself.....to let this one simply pass on by....

Jimmy, In response to this thread I myself raise a few questions.

You say football is the ultimate team game...right? Jimmy, no other team in the country year in and year out proves that fact to be more true than Boise S.T.

You say Georgia has far superior talent across the board...right? Well, ask that to Oklahoma, Oregon, Virginia Tech, TCU...Etc,Etc.  You know what makes that statement more true that anything anyone can debate??? Boise beat all of them. Not like Appalachian S.T beating Michigan. Boise does it EVERY TIME there number is called upon.

Recruiting is bloodline of college football... right? Your correct, it is. But like myself you know that rivals and other groups giving these kids star ratings doesn't mean shit. You know how I know that? Kellen Moore was a one star " recruit ".... Hell, Gaines Adams want even given a scholarship to play at Clemson when he first came... he had to in roll as a walk on. I could go on and on with this stuff, by that's not here nor there. My point is, look at the entire team for Boise S.T.... there coach hand picked these kids to fit what he thinks a winning formula. That's what " recruiting " is, not what rivals says.

But like I have said many times...... When Boise beats Georgia it will an EXCUSE to WHY THEY DID. It wont be because they lined up and punished them. It will be an EXCUSE to WHY.

Jimmy you and I see eye to eye on everything but this subject and for whatever I cant understand why. What I do know is that every time I say Boise will perform on the big stage............they haven't ever let me down.

Football is about a lot of things.....and IMO, Boise is good at all of them.

How much better can Georgia be than the team that lost to UCF in the Liberty Bowl?  Boise loses talent on offense, but they seem to reload every yr, plus the talent level has increased recruiting wise. I'll take the better QB with BCS aspirations.  VT was a much better team last yr when Boise won, than UGA will be this yr.

I tend to disagree with most of this.

Does UGA have better talent?  Maybe but that does not always tell the whole story.  Furthermore Boise may not play against "top talent" all that often but when they do they usually fair pretty well.  So that right there tells me that the "said talent disparity" is not that big of an issue.

Also as is the case with many things in life (especially sports) the team with the most heart should not be counted out.  Look no further than the Dallas Mavericks vs the Miami Heat in the NBA this year.

All in all Georgia has not been very impressive for several years now.  I do not think that they should get a pass just for being in the SEC.  And on top of that many of their losses have been against teams in far inferior conferences.  That combined with the fact that Boise has been pretty solid for a while (despite what people may say) makes it hard for me to be convinced that betting against them is the right play.

In last season's "no bet” edict write-up, I argued that Georgia was one of the most undisciplined teams in the nation.  In support thereof I showed that in 2008 Georgia ranked 117th in the nation in penalties (8.4 pg), and 79th in turnover margin (-0.2 pg).  In 2009 they ranked 111th in penalties (7.8 pg), and 117th in turnover margin (-1.2 pg).  Those stats coupled with the numerous arrests that had taken place over the same period of time lead me to conclude that Richt had completely lost control of his team, and that the inmates were running the asylum. That is exactly what had occurred at Alabama under Shula (which is why I call Richt the Mike Shula of the SEC East).  And with the tail wagging the dog at Georgia like it was at Alabama when Shula was at the helm, all aspects of the football program were suffering, particularly in the area of discipline and strength and conditioning.  In both cases the teams took on the persona of their coaches . . . soft.

After the 2009 season in which they went a very disappointing 8 & 5, the University of Georgia brass called Richt into their office for a little heart-to-heart chat, and they laid down a few edits of their own.  The upshot of that meeting was that his buddy and defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, defensive ends coach Jon Fabris, and linebackers/defensive co-coordinator John Janceck were all shown the door.  Richt was also told that if he wanted to maintain his position as the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, he would need to regain control of his team.  Mark Richt the disciplinarian (I realize how funny that sounds) was born.

Ultimately Todd Grantham was hired to revamp a defense that had surrendered 45 & 34 points to the pedestrian offenses of Tennessee and Kentucky respectively.  With Grantham came the entirely different 3-4 defensive philosophy.  A rigid strength and conditioning program was also instituted, and some of the veterans who had not been held accountable in the past, and who were accustomed to doing things their way (the easy way) were not receptive to the new approach.  Dissention among a group of upperclassmen soon followed.

IMO what is happening at Georgia is mirror of what happened at Alabama during Saban’s first season minus the coaching change.  When Saban came in he also converted to a 3-4 defense, and brought in a strict disciplinarian approach accompanied by a rigid strength and conditioning program.  That resulted in a major backlash amongst some of the upperclassmen who were use to doing things their way.  This division in the team lead to 7 & 6 record in Saban’s inaugural season, including an embarrassing home loss to Louisiana-Monroe.

The next season, after Saban had an opportunity to do some house cleaning, an unranked Bama team opened up against a 6th ranked Clemson team.  Many, many Covers posters thought I had lost my mind when I said that not only would Bama beat Clemson straight up, they would physically dominate them, and by extension, beat them convincingly.  Bama of course won that game 34-10, and went on to a 12 & 0 regular season record, before faltering against Florida and Utah.

Last year’s dissention among the ranks also lead to a divided Georgia team, and a disappointing 6 & 7 record – their first losing season since 1996.  Georgia’s losing record was sealed with a disappointing and embarrassing loss to Central Florida.  And while I’m not asserting Richt is, or ever will be Saban, he has done quite a bit of house cleaning of his own.

Does any of this sound familiar?

And while it is certainly possible with Georgia’s favorable schedule, I am not necessarily predicting a 12 & 0 regular season run.  What I am predicting, however, is the same thing Phil Steele is predicting, which is dramatic turnaround by the Dawgs similar to what the 2008 Bama team experienced in Saban’s second season.

One reason I have hope that Richt’s new tough-guy approach is working is by the vast improvement in the penalty and turnover margin rankings last season.  Georgia’s penalty ranking increased from 111th in 2009 to a very respectable 32nd in 2010 (two notches higher than even Alabama).  That is unheard of for a Richt team.  Moreover, the turnover ratio ranking jumped an astonishing 98 spots from 117th in 2009 to a very impressive 19th in 2010 – also an unheard of achievement for a Richt coached team.

We know Georgia has a significant talent advantage over Boise.  No rational person can argue to the contrary.  The question for us degenerates is will Georgia be able to exploit that advantage in this game.  I have made it no secret that I absolutely think they can and will.  I think this game will look very similar to that 2008 Bama/Clemson game, which is to say that Georgia will win this game rather convincingly.

You may want to re-read the first sentence of my write-up.  Apparently you didn't catch it the first time.

Boise has never shown any capability to hang with a SEC team, or generate any offense against a SEC defens.  There is a reason for that, and it called talent disparity.  Nothing will change in this game.  Boise will lose, and you will lose your money . . . plain and simple.

Great info ...... and as always an excellent writeup. Richt is fighting for his job, nationally televised season opener in what will clearly be a home game for the Dogs, against a Boise team that has earned a reputation as giant killers, and being the underdog. If that isn't enough motivation for Richt to get his team ready, then he needs to be selling Avon. I see Georgia having a huge advantage in talent, and especially in depth. There is a much much bigger drop off in talent with Boises 2nd teamers, than Georgias, and keeping players fresh, will be a big factor in my opinion. Best of luck Jimmy, and thanks for your input  .

There is a much much bigger drop off in talent with Boises 2nd teamers, than Georgias, and keeping players fresh, will be a big factor in my opinion. Best of luck Jimmy, and thanks for your input  .

Saban says that all top teams have 40 really good players.  What makes the difference is the bottom 40.
