Chris McAlister gets my vote. He could shut down half the field. No one dared throw his way.

And laugh if you want but everyone knows Ryan Lief was the shit in College.

    Tommie Frazier
    Charles Woodsen

Chad Owens was bad ass, but many of the guys and gals here probably never got a chance to see him play.  I do agree that he was something very special.

Another small dude who killed it was Maurice Drew-Jones.  I actualy saw him play a high school game in the islands and he toer it up.  And now in the show, one day he will be more peoples minds.

I say Deion "PRIMETIME" Sanders and Marshall Faulk

    Johnny Rogers - Nebraska

That punt return vs Oklahoma was the single greatest college football play of all time IMO.  And no, I am not a Husker fan.

Many great players in history of college football. But cleary running backs were the most dominant players when  looking for the best overall player.  Alot of you guys here are young and can't really go back too far.  I have seen all these players in live games and on TV (the first one when i was 11 years old), except for Barry Sanders who I only saw on TV.  Listed by era.

Early 60's -  Ernie Davis Syracuse Heisman Winner 1961
Davis was 6' 2" and 212 lbs and was like a corvete bulldozer.  Broke all of Jim Brown's carer records enopugh said

Late 60's -  OJ Simpson- USC Heisman Winner 1968 Only played 2years of CF Rushed for 3.187 yards in 18 games (177 per game) if he had played 4 years his records would probably be unbreakable

1970's -  Archie Griifin - Ohio St.  Only 2 time Heisman winner.(1974-75)    That alone makes him arguably the best of all time Had 31 consecutive 100 yd games

1980's - Hershall Walker- Georgia. 1982 Heisman Winner His stats were listed earlier in the thread and if not stated has the NCAA record for rushing yards for a three year period

1990's - Ricky Williams - Texas    All-time NCAA career Rushing Leader. what more to say.

All great candidates and offensive players will always get the nod over defense.  Although in this thread Jack Tatum name is mentioned and I will say I never saw a more dominant defensive player.  Saw him knock out two guys on the same play ( the pulling guard and the running back)

Overall if i had to vote it would go to Archie Griffin. Being the only 2-time Heisman winner puts him over the top but just barely with OJ 2nd and Hershell 3rd.

Glad to see someone mention this man. My favorite player of all time. He was a beast and the most underrated running back of all time. He played with Jeff Kemp and Dieter Brock as QB, and ran the ball 30+ times a game, and they still couldn;t stop him. Made the playoffs every year as a Ram. He played with the same type of talent as Barry Sanders did, but made the playoffs way more. The day he was traded ranks right up there with finding out Santa was fake. I love you ED!

You must not have scrolled far, as I picked him in the second post.  Was shocked no one mentioned Bo Jackson until much later.  He was my #2.

I can't believe I'm reading this. I too saw Archie play, and always considered him the most overrated CFB player of all time. He's the Franco Harris of the college game. Amazing how perceptions can vary.......

Archie Griffin.  You can't argue with 2 Heisman's.

Couldn't agree more, Matador.  Put that guy on another team and we'd never have heard of him, or at least wouldn't be talking about him 30 years later.  Never took your breath away in the way Sanders, or Simms or Frazier or Bush did.  Franco Harris is a great analogy.
