This is why I DESPISE the conference tournaments

You're Bucknell and North Florida. You've dominated all year in your conference. You're the 1 seed. And you lose in the 1st round of the "conference tournament."

Now you don't get in the "NCAA Tournament."

Some love the "conference tournament" because teams have a chance to get in the "NCAA Tournament" after sucking all year. And that's wrong.

So now Holy Cross and Florida Gulf Coast could go on and win the their conference tournament when they really don't deserve it. They've been bad all year and get hott at the right time and get to go to the NCAA tournament.

Bucknell and North Florida dominate all year and screw up once and they're penalized.

Well dang if I'm a coach.. why waste energy in the Regular Season? Let's just wait and go 100 percent in the Conference Tournament.

"IF" Holy Cross and FGC win out.. I'm sure they would play a 1 seed who will beat them by 30 or 40.

I just wish the team playing the 1 seed are the teams who EARN the right to be there. The teams who WIN their conference.

If you cant win your tiny tourney conference you do deserve to go to the big dance.

Lehigh is going to run the table in the Patriot League...and then they will get smoked as a 14 seed in the 1st round!

I get what you're saying, but at the same time, if some of these teams can't take care of a 9,10, or 11 win team in their conference tournament, should they really be getting a spot in the big dance to begin with?

n fla can still get in if fla gulf coast loses. (THAT'S HOW YOU SPELL LOSE PEOPLE)

99% of teams winning these lower school tournaments do not have a prayer, regardless, of going far. I do not ever remember a team, on the bubble, making it into the March Madness tournament , winning it. Besides some worthless bragging rights, it means absolutely nothing. Even the teams that get upset in the first rounds, do not really belong in it.

I wouldn't say N.Fla dominated their conf all year,  They were 22-11  and 10-4 in conf.  3 other teams were 8-6 in conf & FGC were 19-13 overall.  They lost to N.Fla by 6,,beat them by 16 and then just now by 33.  So I wouldn't say that was domination at all.

This stuff happens every year!   You didn't handicap the game correctly.  Tough luck.  Go get a winner  tomorrow.

Ahh. And it continues. Denver wins. Holy Cross on to Finals. Lets hope Chattanooga wins their tournament.

Can I ask you how YOU handicap these contests?

You are crying about North Florida getting bounced in the Atlantic Sun tournament and claim that FGCU doesn't deserve to be there.  Why not?  Because they are an inferior team?

Go look at the numbers.  I use Sagarin Ratings in my handicapping efforts.  According to Sagarin North Florida and FGCU are almost exactly the same.  Go look it up...I'll wait.

You also mention Bucknell getting bounced in the Patriot League.  What does Sagarin tell us about Bucknell and Lehigh?  That's right, they're exactly the same.  Why is one of these teams more deserving than the other?

You mention Holy Cross.  They knocked off Army yesterday.  Another poster in this thread seems to think the only metric that matters is wins and losses.  Nothing could be farther from the truth for teams that play in the "lesser" leagues.  Army had a record of 18 wins 13 losses, but a schedule strength of 326.  Holy Cross was 13 wins 19 losses but a schedule strength of 297.  This is a stat that matters!  If your team plays a more difficult schedule it will prepare your team better than if you play an easier schedule Just like in real life.  A little adversity teaches you how to gut it out 

FGCU had all they could handle last night against Stetson.  Stetson was getting 10 points and lost by 2 in overtime.  Stetson had a strength of schedule of 252.  FGCU schedule strength was 299.

Finally, in my opinion, if a team schedules good teams and loses to them, they absolutely should be rewarded for having a difficult schedule by being allowed to play in their conference tournament.  And if they win their conference tournament they will be better prepared to take on the Big Dogs, than a team with a weaker schedule.

I think it's great if you can't beat the teams in your conference how can you do well vs the big programs then.

Could not be more wrong.. It is HUGE for a small conference team to play in the Big Dance.. Winning aint everything to them.. Its nice to be able to dream about beating Goliath and getting a small chance to do it.. Great for next years potential scholarship players as a sales pitch.. Alumni and players get a free roadie with all the perks and for these kids its a HUGE deal.. Financial rewards..   Playing on prime time big time TV.. For almost all the players a once in a lifetime experience win or lose.. For a small school just a spot in the tourney is BAD behind ... Over the moon..

True and there's no really good argument against it. More leagues should make like the Ivy or European soccer and reward the teams that play best, thereby increasing the value of the actual regular season that's already hard enough to grind out. Look at the absurdity of mlb teams playing 162 games to get into a ONE game playoff!!
