Sunday’s fifth and final WNBA game will be between the Connecticut Sun and Golden State Valkyries at the Chase Center.

The league’s newest team has been surprisingly good in its first season so far and could be a legitimate playoff team already.

My Sun vs Valkyries predictions and WNBA picks reflect how the home team — particularly Kayla Thornton — will handle business on Sunday, June 22.

Sun vs Valkyries predictions

My Sun vs Valkyries best bet: Kayla Thornton Over 14.5 points (-120 at DraftKings)

Kayla Thornton is having a career year in her age-32 season. The former New York Liberty forward has been thrust into the spotlight with a new team and hasn’t shied away from center stage.

Thornton has averaged more than 10.0 points per game once in her career, but has thrived as the first option on the Golden State Valkyries, a team that features seven double-digit scorers.

She’s strung together an impressive streak of offensive performances in June, scoring at least 15 points in five straight. She’s averaged 19.0 points while shooting 45.7% from the field and 41.0% from deep during that span.

The Connecticut Sun defense will struggle to slow her down.

Only the Chicago Sky have a worse scoring defense than the Sun this season. The visitors are giving up 87.6 points per game to opposing teams. Golden State’s depth will make it tough for Connecticut to key in on Thornton. She has all the tools to thrive and can take advantage of a favorable matchup.

Sun vs Valkyries same-game parlay (SGP)

Kalya Thornton Over 14.5 points

Veronica Burton Under 5.5 assists

Valkyries -9.5

Veronica Burton is having a career year of her own as Golden State’s top playmaker, averaging 5.2 assists per game, but could have a tough time reaching six against the Sun.

Burton has fallen short of six assists in eight of the 12 games she’s appeared in. She’s recorded fewer than five dimes in her last two appearances. Bettors shouldn’t let her impressive peak games blind them from the likelihood of her having duds here and there. She’ll get plenty of opportunities for assists, given the depth around her, but she’s bound to have lows and is trending in the wrong direction.

The Valkyries have quietly been one of the WNBA’s best teams at home, going 4-1 against the spread while covering four consecutive home games since getting blown out by the Los Angeles Sparks in their season opener.
