Sun vs Sky Predictions, Picks, Odds for Tonight’s WNBA Game

Alyssa Thomas is picking up right where she left off last season, and our WNBA picks think the Sun forward should keep putting up big numbers against a small-ball Sky lineup tonight.

An OT thriller on Thursday kept the Connecticut Sun undefeated and first in the Eastern Conference as they head to Wintrust Arena to take on the Chicago Sky.

With an MVP candidate leading the way, the WNBA odds have 4-0 Connecticut as a 6-point road favorite, and Alyssa Thomas is the focus of my Sun vs. Sky prediction for tonight’s showdown with rookie sensation Angel Reese.

Check out my WNBA picks for Saturday, May 25.

Sun vs Sky predictions

My best bet
Alyssa Thomas Over 33.5 points + rebounds + assists (-115 at bet365)

My analysis
If any player can be both under-appreciated and a WNBA MVP odds candidate at the same time, it’s Alyssa Thomas. The four-time All-Star finished second in MVP voting last season to Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty, and is shaping up for another Top-3 finish this year.

It’s hard to argue that there’s a better all-around player in the WNBA with her defense, inside game, rebounding dominance, and playmaking instinct. She ranks 15th in points per game (17.0), fifth in rebounds (10.5), and second in assists (8.3) this season after combining to average 33.3 last year.

While this Sky team is off to a strong start and just upset the Liberty on the road, it’s a small sample size from a team that was just 18-22 last year and ranked in the back half of the league in defensive rating.

Despite the additions of Angel Reese and Diamond DeShields paying dividends early, Chicago is still giving up the fourth-most 2-pointers per game (23.3) and the most rebounds (39).

That’s where Thomas makes her money, down low. Chicago is currently rolling with a three-guard starting lineup, too, and is still without No. 3 overall pick Kamilla Cardoso. That should help the 6-foot-2 Thomas be a bully inside.

With her ability to clean the glass and get to the rim, it’s almost unfair that she’s also one of the WNBA’s best passers. Watching Thomas rip down a rebound and then immediately start leading the fast break before finding a cutter is a thing of beauty.

It certainly helps that she has a frontcourt partner in DeWanna Bonner, who’s capable of consistently taking advantage of Thomas’ mesmerizing passes. The assists are just a cherry on top of this prop with the way the Sun’s star will be capable of doing damage around the rim as both a scorer and rebounder.

Sun vs Sky same-game parlay (SGP)

Alyssa Thomas Over 33.5 points, rebounds, and assists

Angel Reese Under 7.5 rebounds

Marina Mabrey Under 2.5 made 3-pointers

For as great of a start as Reese has had to her WNBA career, the Sun could pose the toughest test yet. Not only will she have to deal with Thomas in the paint, but Connecticut also deploys a pair of 6-foot-4 bigs in Bonner and Brionna Jones.

While Reese is pulling down a team-leading 8.7 boards per game, the Sun rank first in the WNBA in rebounds allowed per game (31.3). It’ll be a challenge for her and leading-scoring Marina Mabrey to continue their impressive play against this ferocious Connecticut defense.

With Reese owning the paint for Chicago, Mabrey has been a perfect complement in the backcourt. However, she’s still struggling to find a rhythm with her long-range game. Mabrey is shooting just 30.8% from deep and this is a Connecticut team that’s ranked Top 3 in 3-point percentage allowed in each of the last five seasons.
