Two struggling teams will face off in Tuesday’s meeting between the Los Angeles Sparks and Chicago Sky.
Both squads are second-to-last in their respective conferences and could use a pick-me-up to build some momentum. Chicago could be at a major disadvantage in the frontcourt if one trend continues, though.
My Sparks vs. Sky predictions and WNBA picks tell you how Kamilla Cardoso’s reduced role could affect the outcome of this Tuesday, June 24 contest.
Sparks vs Sky predictions
My Sparks vs Sky best bet: Sparks -5.5 (-110 at bet365)
The Los Angeles Sparks have failed to cover in three straight games and are 5-9 against the spread overall this season. However, their bigs could have a field day against the Chicago Sky on Tuesday.
Kamilla Cardoso is set to miss three games after Tuesday’s contest to join Brazil’s national team in Americup. The Sky center’s playing time was questionable in Chicago’s latest game against the Atlanta Dream. She scored seven points on 3 of 4 shooting in the first half and did not attempt a field goal in any of her seven second-half minutes in a close game.
Her minutes could be limited again before she enters an international break, where she’ll be heavily relied upon by her home country. The Sparks have the personnel to feast without Cardoso in the painted area.
The Sky are giving up a league-high 88.4 points per game to opposing teams despite having the 6-foot-7 center down low. The Sparks' tandem of Dearica Hamby and Azura Stevens are well-equipped to make Chicago pay when Cardoso isn’t on the floor.
Hamby and Stevens are averaging 29.9 points and 16.6 rebounds per contest as a duo this season. That production will be tough for Cardoso and Elizabeth Williams to match.
Williams reached double-digits in points for the first time this season against the Dream last time out, so there’s no telling what she’ll bring to the table on offense in this matchup.
Chicago is 5-8 against the spread and has failed to cover in three straight home games.
Sparks vs Sky same-game parlay (SGP)
Kelsey Plum is clearly the Sparks’ first option on offense, but there’s plenty of room for the second and third options to thrive as well in this matchup. Few teams present a better matchup for Los Angeles to get all its scorers going in the same contest.
The Sparks’ middling offense posted 91 points in a blowout win the first time they faced the Sky this season. Los Angeles shot an impressive 47.0% from the field in that matchup, and Chicago is allowing opposing teams to shoot a league-high 46.1% from the field so far this season.
Hamby tallied just 10 points on an uncharacteristically bad 3 of 11 shooting night in her first meeting with the Sky this campaign, while Stevens erupted for 24 points on 14 shots. Both forwards will likely attempt 10 or more shots in Round 2, and Chicago’s defense hasn’t gotten any better since the last time these two teams met.
I’m banking on Hamby and Stevens to comfortably go Over their point totals. Both marks are below their season averages of 16.5 and 13.4 points per contest. Neither player will have to have a particularly strong shooting night for these bets to hit.
