Alyssa Thomas has been handing out assists like candy since her return from injury, and we expect the Mercury star to have her way dissecting the league's worst defense.

Of course, the WNBA schedulers still could not stay out of their own way, forcing the Connecticut Sun to play a back-to-back.

Connecticut was always going to be at a disadvantage tonight. The Phoenix Mercury are far and away better, hence being 14.5-point favorites.

My Mercury vs. Sun predictions will skip that spread and instead focus on Phoenix’s best player.

Mercury vs Sun predictions

My Mercury vs Sun best bet: Alyssa Thomas Over 8.5 assists (-136 at FanDuel)

Alyssa Thomas missed two weeks due to a calf concern, returning only last Wednesday. In her two games back, she has handed out 10 and then 13 assists. To further help our case, let’s quickly point out her last game before that injury featured 15 assists.

This is who Thomas is. It is why the Phoenix Mercury added her to a roster already ripe with scorers. Facilitating them should make opponents’ lives miserable.

When Thomas returned with 10 assists, she did it in only 23 minutes, partly because she had been sidelined for two weeks, and also because that was a blowout of the Wings. On Sunday, she played 29 minutes.

Logic expects Thomas to crack 30 minutes tonight, even if the Mercury blow out the Connecticut Sun.

And they should. Connecticut lost last night in Indiana — a game marked by headlines of frustration and chippy play late in a blowout.

Not only are the Sun playing on the second night of a back-to-back, but they also had to travel home overnight. On top of that, following the altercation between Marina Mabrey and Caitlin Clark, they've had to deal with nonstop noise and distractions ever since.

They will largely ignore that, but perhaps not entirely. Some added fatigue would be only natural.

Connecticut already has the worst defensive rating in the WNBA — 4.5 points per 100 possessions. Added fatigue should only exacerbate that weakness, and no one is happier to exploit those lapses than Alyssa Thomas.

Mercury vs Sun same-game parlay (SGP)

Alyssa Thomas 10+ assists

Satou Sabally 15+ points

Mercury -14.5

Asking for one more assist from Thomas yields a payout bump of 50 cents. Frankly, that may be a better bet than the best bet above.

Satou Sabally is one of those pure scorers that Thomas was brought in to set up. Sabally has scored at least 15 points in 11 of 12 games this season.

Trusting the Mercury to cover this massive spread is partly a bet against the Sun. Only last night’s nonsense kept them within that +17.5 spread at Indiana, and Connecticut is 4-7 against the spread for a reason.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
