PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Vance Worley (7-1, 2.33 ERA) at Giants LH Jonathan Sanchez (4-5, 3.81 ERA)
Worley gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings against the Pirates last Sunday. He earned a complete game win against the Giants on July 26. The Phillies are 8-0 in Worley's last eight starts.
Sanchez is making his first start since landing on the disabled list with left biceps tendinitis in late June. He is 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA in nine career games - five starts - against the Phillies. The Giants are 9-2 in Sanchez's last 11 home starts.
ABOUT THE PHILLIES (72-39): With reliever Ryan Madson on paternity leave, Philadelphia recalled Scott Mathieson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday. Madson is expected back on Saturday. After six weeks on the disabled list, Roy Oswalt (back) is set to make his first start since June 23 this Sunday. Oswalt, who is 4-6 with a 3.79 ERA, will replace Kyle Kendrick in the rotation. He made two rehab starts at Lehigh Valley and said he's pain-free. When Oswalt is activated, the Phillies will need to make room on their 25-man roster. It's possible the Phillies will send down right fielder Ben Francisco, who started just four games in July. After a hot start, Francisco cooled off and was passed by John Mayberry Jr. on the depth chart. Infielder Wilson Valdez could also be demoted since switch hitter Michael Martinez appears to be getting more opportunities of late.
ABOUT THE GIANTS (62-50): Manager Bruce Bochy is sticking with the veteran. Despite first baseman Aubrey Huff's season-long offensive slump, Bochy clearly wants to give the veteran every opportunity to regain his stroke from a year ago, when he helped power the Giants to a World Series title. While many fans would prefer the Giants bench Huff and give rookie Brandon Belt an extended look at first base, Bochy and the Giants' front office decided Thursday that Huff deserves more time to improve his .244 average. As a result, Belt was demoted to Triple-A Fresno when the Giants activated infielder Mark DeRosa from the disabled list. Belt would have served as just a pinch-hitter with the Giants, and the team wants him to get regular at-bats in Fresno. DeRosa has had surgery on his left wrist twice in the past two years, but he's optimistic he'll be able to contribute as a reserve down the stretch. He went 10-for-34 in nine games during his rehab assignment in Fresno.
FINAL PITCH: The Phillies are 37-16 in their last 53 games against teams from the National League West.
