Florida @ New York preview
Citi Field
Last Meeting ( Jul 24, 2011 ) NY Mets 4, Florida 5
THE STORY: David Wright has been red-hot since returning from the disabled list, but he’s done all his damage on the road. He’ll get a chance to bask in the cheers of the Citi Field faithful on Monday. Wright will take the field there for the first time in more than two months when the New York Mets host the Florida Marlins. Though he’s coming off his second complete game of the season, Mike Pelfrey will need all the help he can get from Wright and the rest of the offense against the Marlins, who have tortured him over the years.
TV: 7:10 pm. ET, Fox Sports Florida, SNY
PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Mike Pelfrey (6-9, 4.55 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Javier Vazquez (7-9, 5.10 ERA).
Pelfrey’s only win against Florida came in his rookie season of 2006. He’s 0-7 with a 5.40 ERA in 14 starts since then. He gave up four runs and five hits in six innings in the Mets’ 7-6 win over Florida on July 22. Omar Infante is hitting an obscene .565 (13-for-23) against Pelfrey and Mike Stanton is 5-for-11 with a pair of homers vs. the righthander.
Vazquez is 3-1 with a 3.20 ERA over his last four starts. The righthander allowed one run and six hits in seven innings of a 7-5 win over Washington on Wednesday. Wright is hitting .308 (4-for-13) with a homer and two RBIs against him.
ABOUT THE METS (55-53): The Mets return home after going 6-4 on a 10-game road trip. Wright, who missed 59 games with a stress fracture in his lower back, is hitting .455 (20-for-44) with two homers and 12 RBIs since returning from the DL. He extended his hitting streak to 10 games by going 1-for-4 Sunday, but his career-best run of seven straight multi-hit games ended. He was one shy of tying Steve Henderson’s franchise record of eight straight set in 1979. Rookie Lucas Duda is 3-for-16 with a homer and five RBIs in four games since taking over for the departed Carlos Beltran. The Mets traded Beltran to San Francisco for minor-league righthander Zack Wheeler. The 21-year-old Wheeler, who was the Giants’ top pitching prospect, is expected to make his debut for Class A Port St. Lucie on Monday.
ABOUT THE MARLINS (53-55): Florida avoided being swept by Atlanta on Sunday and improved to 4-2 on a nine-game road trip. Emilio Bonifacio, who had his 26-game hitting streak halted on Friday, homered in the win. After he went 0-for-4 to end the streak Bonifacio said: “It's hard, man. It's not an easy thing to do." Mike Stanton makes hitting home runs look easy. He leads the National League with six homers since the All-Star break. Florida is 41-18 when it hits at least one home run, which is the third-best mark in the NL.
FINAL PITCH: Jason Isringhausen, who took over as closer when the Mets traded Francisco Rodriguez, is two saves shy of becoming the 23rd reliever to record 300 saves.
