Los Angeles @ Florida preview
Sun Life Stadium
Last Meeting ( Jun 21, 2011 ) LA Angels 2, Florida 5
THE STORY: It only took two games with Jack McKeon at the helm for the Florida Marlins to double their win total for the month. McKeon and the Marlins snapped a franchise-worst 11-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. Now they will look for back-to-back wins for the first time since winning three straight from May 24-26 when the three-game interleague series wraps up Wednesday.
TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports West (Los Angeles), Fox Sports Florida
PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Joel Pineiro (3-3, 3.92 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Brad Hand (0-3, 3.45 ERA). Pineiro earned his 100th career victory Friday, winning for the first time since May 10. He was winless in his six previous starts but allowed only two runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 4-3 win over the Mets. Pineiro is 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA in two starts against the Marlins. After a strong performance in his major league debut when he allowed one run over six innings in a 1-0 loss to the Braves on June 7, Hand has had a bit more trouble his past two starts. He didn't get out of the fifth inning Friday against the Rays, giving up three runs on a pair of home runs. The Marlins haven't helped him at the plate either, scoring two runs in his three starts.
ABOUT THE ANGELS (36-39): The Angels' offensive struggles continue. They were 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position Tuesday until Torii Hunter's RBI single in the ninth, and they are 2-for-25 in those situations in the first two games of the series. Los Angeles has averaged 2.7 runs per game in June. Still, the Angels have a chance to win their third straight series with a win Wednesday.
ABOUT THE MARLINS (33-41): Florida improved to 2-19 in June, and its five runs were its most in nine games since June 13. Slumping star Hanley Ramirez responded well to hitting in the cleanup spot for the first time in his career Tuesday - he went 2-for-4 for his first multi-hit game since May 21 - and Mike Stanton returned after missing three games with an eye infection and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
FINAL PITCH: Pineiro is only the fourth Puerto Rican-born pitcher in major league history to reach 100 wins, joining Javier Vazquez, Juan Pizarro and Jaime Navarro.
