Los Angeles @ Los Angeles preview
Dodger Stadium
Last Meeting ( Jun 24, 2011 ) LA Angels 8, LA Dodgers 3
THE STORY: On Saturday, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels will tangle in the second game of the three-game Freeway Series with both squads looking to build momentum for a run into the All-Star break. To do that, the Dodgers will need to beat their freeway nemeses, something they’ve struggled to do in the past – particularly at home. The Angels have won six of their last seven games against the Dodgers and are 9-3 in their last 12 games at Dodger Stadium.
TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FOX
PITCHING MATCHUP: Los Angeles Angels RH Tyler Chatwood (4-4 3.84) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers RH Hiroki Kuroda (5-8, 3.07)
Chatwood, who has pitched well in his rookie season despite having an almost even strikeout-to-walk ratio, has kept the ball in the park, allowing just two home runs in his last 58 2/3 innings. He'll be making his first-career start against the Dodgers and will be seeking his second-straight win after pitching seven shutout innings against the Mets in his last start.
Kuroda heads to the mound looking to atone for his poor luck in recent starts. He hasn't won since May 17 and is 0-5 in his last six starts, but despite the poor results, has pitched well. In his last four starts, the Dodgers' starter is 0-3 but has allowed just five earned runs in 24 2/3 innings and sports a 1.82 ERA in that span. Kuroda has started just once against the Angels in the past three seasons, taking the loss in a 2008 start where he yielded four runs in 6 1/3 innings.
ABOUT THE ANGELS (38-39): The offensive woes have continued through the month of June for the Angels. The Angels have scored three runs or fewer in 13 of 20 games played in June, and are 6-32 overall when scoring three runs or less. Erick Aybar homered Friday night to help give the Angels the win, but they’ll need more production from the middle of the lineup. Vernon Wells seemed to have shaken the offensive doldrums following a two home-run game against the Mariners last week, but is still hitting just .203 overall.
ABOUT THE DODGERS (34-43): The Dodgers’ roster could look drastically different in the next couple weeks as several players are set to return from injury. The Dodgers could soon get closer Jonathan Broxton back from the disabled list. Broxton struck out the side in a one-inning rehabilitation appearance for Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday. They could also get Rafael Furcal, who is scheduled to begin rehabilitation games this weekend. Fucal could move to second base, to ensure that talented rookie Dee Gordon can stay in the lineup for Los Angeles, which has dropped seven of its last 10 games.
FINAL PITCH: The Angels pronounced Torii Hunter day-to-day after the outfielder crashed into a wall making a catch against the Marlins. He sat out Friday night’s game with the Dodgers and isn’t expected to play Saturday.
