THE STORY: The Chicago Cubs look to build on Monday's comeback win when they play the second of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. The Cubs fell into an early three-run hole in the series opener before storming back for a 6-3 victory. Carlos Peña's three-run homer was the decisive blow, part of a four-run sixth inning, and Starlin Castro also had a home run and three RBIs for the Cubs.
TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, WGN, Comcast Sports (Chicago)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Matt Garza (3-6, 4.14) vs. White Sox LH Mark Buehrle (6-5, 3.75)
Garza won for the first time since May 11 in his last start despite giving up five earned runs in six innings against Milwaukee on June 16. He continued to struggle with his control — Garza has 13 walks and 13 strikeouts over his last four starts — and he has allowed three home runs in his last three games after surrendering just one through May. In four career starts against the White Sox, all while with Tampa Bay, Garza is 1-2 with a 6.87 ERA.
Since enduring a rough April, Buehrle has turned in nine consecutive quality starts, going 5-2 with a 2.78 ERA during that stretch. He was on the losing end of a 1-0 game in his June 16 start at Minnesota despite allowing just three hits in seven innings. Buehrle has been particularly comfortable at home this year, going 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA at U.S. Cellular Field. He has seen plenty of action against his crosstown rival over the years, posting a 5-4 record and a 4.20 ERA in 12 career starts against the Cubs.
ABOUT THE CUBS (30-42): Castro has been one of the few consistent contributors in the Chicago lineup this year, batting a team-best .318 with 35 runs batted in. His partner in the Cubs' talented young middle infield, rookie 2B Darwin Barney (.294), is currently on the disabled list with a knee injury. Barney is one of several players who have missed time this year due to injuries, along with the team's home run leader, LF Alfonso Soriano (14), and CF Marlon Byrd. Reserve OF Reed Johnson (.359), who returned from the disabled list a week ago, has homered twice in seven games while filling in for Byrd.
ABOUT THE WHITE SOX (35-39): Few hitters have been as hot in the month of June as 1B Paul Konerko, who has homered each of the last four days to bump his total for the month to nine in just 15 games. He is also 24-for-57 (.421) since the end of May with 17 runs batted in. Konerko leads the team on the season with a .327 average, 20 home runs and 58 RBIs, ranking him in the American League's top four in each of those three categories. Chicago's relief pitching has also shown major improvement after a rough April thanks to the emergence of closer Sergio Santos (12 saves, 3.31 ERA).
FINAL PITCH: White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was ejected in the bottom of the sixth inning Monday for arguing balls and strikes. The ejection was the 27th of Guillen's career.
