A Ford Avoid sticky throttle recall has been publicized by the automaker. The recall was started by Ford as an NHTSA investigation into the phenomenon has just started. Nobody surprised by recall

Because of grievances that cruise control cables were locking the throttle to the open position of the Ford Escape, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced an investigation. The V-6 versions from 2001 to 2004 were an enormous part of the investigation.

The issue at the heart of incidents of a Ford Escape sticky throttle is due to bad repairs from an earlier recall, according to AutoGuide. That recall, which occurred in 2004, was for accelerator cables which stuck to the pedal and could jam open. If a technician damaged the cruise control cable, adjacent to the throttle cable, the cruise control cable could loosen and get trapped under the plastic motor cover, sticking the throttle open and causing unintended acceleration.

USA Today reports that the Center for Automotive Safety pressured the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration to start an investigation into the issue. According to CBS, Ford has decided to recall the Escape versions voluntarily though.

Recall impacts almost 500,000 vehicles

The Ford Escape sticky throttle recall covers 485,000 vehicles, such as the Ford Avoid and also the Ford Maverick, which the Escape was sold as in some international markets. It's not known if that also covers the Mazda Tribute, which was a Ford Escape re-badged as a Mazda. There are 423,000 Avoid models impacted in the U.S., according to The Detroit News, and a further 60,000 located outside the United States Other nations impacted by the recall consist of Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and some other locations, according to the Huffington Post.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration explained that there have been 31 complaints of unintended acceleration from Mazda Tribute owners and 68 grievances from Ford Avoid owners. One of those led to the death of a 17-year-old Saige bloom from Arizona who had her Escape fixed in the first recall. There were 13 total crashes reported and nine injuries.

In order to fix the problem, technicians will install new fasteners for the engine cover to raise it so there is more room between the motor cover and engine block. Hopefully, that will keep the cruise control cable from getting trapped. Proprietors have to take their vehicles to a Ford dealership to get the defect fixed.

You might need to wait a few weeks for fasteners to be delivered to the dealers.
