Michigan finally chose its nominees Tuesday night for its highly important U.S. Senate and Governor races this fall. With Democrats needing to hold Michigan’s Senate seat to protect themselves in 2026 Senate odds and Republicans anxious to make a gain in this Trump-won state, Michigan election odds will be important through Election Day.
And with districts that will be crucial for House control odds, Michigan’s primaries are crucial to understanding the state of 2026 midterm odds.
Primary fallout: El-Sayed’s path to the General Election
Democrats nominated Abdul El-Sayed, the Bernie Sanders-endorsed leftist candidate, to run against Mike Rogers, who narrowly lost in 2024 while Trump won Michigan. El-Sayed survived a tough primary against Haley Stevens, where his electability was a focal point of the race. Democrats need to gain four seats net to flip the Senate, meaning that if they lose Michigan, they’d have to flip five other seats to get a Senate majority. With El-Sayed, Republicans have the nominee they want to run against.
Democrats have seen their odds in prediction market apps fall in recent weeks as the risk of El-Sayed being the nominee has risen. A Glengariff poll commissioned for Michigan’s Teachers and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce had El-Sayed losing to Rogers by 9%, while an Epic-MRA poll had El-Sayed down 2%. Betting odds have seen Democrats’ chances of victory fall from 75% a month ago to 61% now, reflecting a surge in distrust of the Democratic nominee’s electability.
The national environment also matters in this conversation, as Republicans have seen their fortunes decline in recent days. With Donald Trump being unable to wind down the Iran war, gas prices rising, and polls showing Democrats expanding their national lead, 2026 midterm odds aren’t getting better nationally. But in Michigan Senate odds, they are.
Republicans are hopeful that Rogers’ clean run in the primary is beneficial in the general election, as he has a substantially easier job of unifying his party than El-Sayed does.

Tracking the shift: How primary results impact Senate odds
Democrats are worried that El-Sayed won’t be able to unite the party, especially after his tiny victory. As of 8 p.m. Tuesday night, when the polls closed in Michigan, Democrats had a 66% chance of winning per Michigan Senate odds. Now that he has officially won the nomination, the number had dropped to 57% as of Friday, as El-Sayed’s incredibly narrow victory has people worried that his primary weakness will continue into the general election.
Michigan voted for a Democratic Senator in 2024 despite voting for Kamala Harris. The state last elected a Republican to the Senate in 1994, but since then Donald Trump has won the state twice, albeit by less than 2% both times. Despite Kamala Harris losing the state in 2024, Democrats were able to hold the other Senate seat against Mike Rogers.
However, Democrats are not running the same playbook this time. Last time, they nominated a swing district Congresswoman with a record of performing well under pressure. Now they’re running an untested candidate who has never run in a general election before and who has never held elected office. Despite 2026 being overwhelmingly likely to be bluer than 2024, Democrats’ change in tune on the candidate front changes Michigan election odds considerably.
What Michigan means for national Senate control
With so few Senate seats deciding control of the chamber, Democrats now having to play defense in Michigan affects overall Senate control odds. Democrats have gained in crucial races across the country in Senate odds -- replacing Graham Platner with Troy Jackson returned their status as a frontrunner in Maine Senate odds, while Sherrod Brown has cemented himself as a narrow favorite in Ohio Senate odds. But with Michigan slipping, Democrats remain narrow underdogs in Senate control odds.
Republicans see Michigan as a way to bail out losses in other states. In fact, their chances of winning Michigan are now better than Maine, per prediction market election odds, despite having an incumbent in Maine and not having one in Michigan.
Michigan Governor race: Stability amidst Senate volatility
Democrat Jocelyn Benson and Republican John James both won their primaries on Tuesday night, advancing to the general election. With Democrats currently holding the Governor’s Mansion and James being a two-time statewide loser, Democrats are big favorites to win in Michigan Governor Odds. Unlike in Michigan Senate odds, the primary results did not change Michigan Governor odds.
Battle for the House: Analyzing Key Michigan Districts
Michigan’s 7th House District was the big mover of the night. Democrats peaked at 86% favorites in this crucial swing seat in May, and as recently as July were at 80% to win. Now, this important seat for Democrats’ hopes of winning back the House is down to a 57% chance for William Lawrence, a progressive who won over two more moderate candidates. Republicans are re-enthused about their chances of beating Lawrence and saving Tom Barrett, who won this seat in 2024 to help Republicans narrowly hold the House majority.
In Michigan’s other competitive House District, the 10th, Democrats remain favored with a 70% chance of winning, unchanged since before the primary.
