Rangers vs Devils picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

Rangers vs Devils hasn’t been much of a rivalry lately, as the Blueshirts have skated away with the win in eight of their last 10 meetings. New Jersey managed to stun New York with a 7-4 victory in this arena only two weeks ago, but bettors should not expect lightning to strike twice in this one.

The Rangers’ recent loss to the Devils can be chalked up to fatigue, as the Blueshirts had just completed a weekend sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes only one day before facing their rivals across the Hudson. New York came out firing on all cylinders in the first period of their third game in four nights, taking a 2-0 lead, before the wheels came off in a five-goal second frame for the Devils.

The Rangers managed to win their next four games after that shocking defeat, outscoring the opposition 18-11. They took a surprising 3-0 loss to the languishing New York Islanders on Friday, then fell behind 3-0 to the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night. But the Blueshirts battled back in that most recent contest, reeling off three straight goals to bring things to overtime.

Though the Rangers lost in a shootout, grabbing a point when things looked bleak had to boost morale in the locker room.

New York is hopeful that center Ryan Strome will return to the lineup after missing four games with a lower-body injury. Meanwhile, New Jersey center Jack Hughes — who scored twice when the Devils beat the Rangers on March 22 — left Sunday’s loss to the Islanders in the second period with a lower-body injury, and his status for this tilt is up in the air.

The Devils can ill afford to lose Hughes, as they’re mired in a deep funk even with the former overall No. 1 pick in the lineup. New Jersey has dropped eight of its last 10 overall and was outscored 50-34 in that span.

Prediction: Rangers ML (-154 at WynnBET)

Over/Under analysis

The Rangers have been playing an exciting brand of hockey lately, with a total of 50 goals being scored over their last seven games, for an average of just over seven tallies per tilt. The Blueshirts are responsible for 25 of those goals, despite Strome missing four games.

Leading points-earner Artemi Panarin (82) has gelled well with new linemate Andrew Copp, who has played center on “The Breadman’s” line for the last four contests. The pair has combined for 10 points in that stretch.

They’ll be firing against some subpar Devils goaltending, as the trio of Nico Daws, John Gillies, and Andrew Hammond has combined to surrender 50 goals in a 10-game span. Igor Shesterkin has been the exact opposite of subpar between the pipes for the Rangers this season, though he’s slipped a bit in recent games.

March was arguably Shesterkin’s worst month of the season, as he produced a 2.68 GAA and .916 save percentage – decent numbers, but not Vezina Trophy quality. He’s begun April by allowing three goals in back-to-back games against two lackluster offenses in the Islanders and Flyers, respectively.

Prediction: Over 6.0 (-115 at FanDuel)

Best bet

The Rangers should not take a win over the Devils for granted after what transpired at the Prudential Center just two weeks ago. The recently-acquired Copp and Frank Vatrano continue to play effectively, and complement the dangerous Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Chris Kreider well.

Meanwhile, New Jersey has not rewarded its backers lately, as the Devils have struggled mightily to keep pucks out of their own net. That trend should continue on Tuesday night, and bettors should back the Rangers at a fair price on the moneyline.

Pick: Rangers ML (-154 at WynnBET)
