NHL picks for today
We're in for another interstate battle between the Islanders and Sabres following New York's 3-1 victory last night. The two sides combined for just 50 shots in that contest, which makes sense considering how much both teams have struggled to generate offense this year.
Despite adding Taylor Hall as a free agent, the Sabres are dead-last in the NHL in even-strength goals scored per 60 minutes with just 1.68. The Islanders are second-last in that category with 2.01 goals per 60 minutes.
To boot, both teams have been stingy on the defensive end of the ice. The Isles allow the fourth-fewest high-danger chances per 60 minutes, while the Sabres rank seventh.
Although both sides will likely turn to their No. 2 netminders on the tail end of a back-to-back, we still like the Under with five of the last six meetings between these teams going below the total. After all, the Sabres are 12-5 to the Under in their last 17 games without rest, while the Islanders are 9-2 to the Under in their previous 11 contests on the road.
PREDICTION: Under 5.5 (-120)
The Wild haven't exactly been filling up the net this season, ranking 21st in goals per game. They've been particularly brutal during the second frame, scoring just six goals during the second period across 11 games this year.
That second period has also been their worst defensively, with Minnesota giving up 14 second-period goals, compared to the 16 goals they've surrendered in the first and third periods combined.
Meanwhile, the Kings have actually been very good during the second period, posting a goal differential of plus-9 during that frame.
With talented youngster Cal Peterson (2.55 GAA and .924 save percentage in 27 career games) expected to get the start in nets for the Kings tonight, back them on the second period moneyline.
PREDICTION: Second period Moneyline Los Angeles (+100)
Both of these teams are among the top squads in the league, with the Knights 10-2-1 and the Avalanche 7-4-1. Both teams are very similar statistically as well. The Avs and Knights are tied for the league-lead in goals allowed, holding foes to just 2.08 goals per game. Colorado is 12th in the league in scoring with 3.17 goals per game, while Vegas is just one spot behind them with 3.15 gpg.
When it comes to controlling possession of the puck, Colorado leads the NHL in Fenwick For rating in 5v5 hockey, while Vegas leads the league in Fenwick For across all strengths. And while the Knights are terrific at home, going 23-7 in their last 30 games in Vegas, the Avs are 17-8 in their previous 25 contests on the road.
Goaltending is also a wash. Avs goalie Phillipp Grubauer has posted a sensational 1.61 GAA with a .937 save percentage in 10 games this year, and Knights netminder Marc-Andre Fleury has a 1.38 GAA and a save percentage of .944 in eight starts.
With so many similarities between these squads, the Over/Under might be an easier play than the moneyline. With the Under going 9-1-1 in the Knights' last 11 games against teams with a winning record, expect another low-scoring duel with a tense, playoff atmosphere tonight. Back the Under.
PREDICTION: Under 5.5 (+102)
