Alabama will look to turn around the narratives of their season to at least some degree when they welcome Wisconsin to town on Saturday. Both teams will enter this matchup off big wins from non-Power 4 opponents. I expect a dominant performance from the Tide.

Check out my early Wisconsin vs. Alabama predictions and college football picks for September 13.

Wisconsin vs Alabama predictions

Here are our early thoughts on the spread and total for this week’s game. We will have a full game preview (with a best bet and SGP) later in the week.

Early Wisconsin vs Alabama spread pick: Alabama -20.5

Florida State opened the season with a dominant win over the Alabama Cimson Tide, a result that shook college football. Home losses in Tuscaloosa are never ordinary, and this one instantly turned up the pressure on second-year head coach Kalen DeBoer.

While Alabama’s financial reality (anybody got $70 million laying around?) likely prevents any immediate moves, the demand for improvement is clear. That urgency matters when analyzing this spread.

Alabama has every reason to run it up in this matchup. Unlike most teams, the Tide don’t need style points to reach the playoff if they win out. But DeBoer needs them to rebuild trust with a restless fanbase. A dominant performance over the Wisconsin Badgers would go a long way toward silencing critics.

The matchup itself favors Alabama heavily. Quarterback Ty Simpson remains one of the highest-graded QBs in college football by PFF and ranks among the leaders in QBR. He faces a defense that has struggled to create negative plays, giving him a clear path to success.

The bigger advantage comes on the other side of the ball. Wisconsin’s offense has been statistically average even against two lower-tier opponents. Facing Alabama’s SEC-caliber defense, which is deeper and faster at every level, it’s hard to see the Badgers generating consistent production.

All signs point toward Alabama responding in emphatic fashion.

Early Wisconsin vs Alabama total pick: Under 46.5

I think the total here is mostly right on the nose, giving us not much of an edge. That said, I’m leaning toward the Under, as I just don’t trust this Wisconsin offense to do much.

You could say that the Badgers’ opener, in which they found themselves in a war with Miami (OH) while winning 17-0, was a product of rust. I’d say that’s kind, but I’ll grant you it for the purposes of the argument. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the metrics a week later against Middle Tennessee State.

Yes, the Badgers did score 42 points against the Blue Raiders, but that performance did little to convince you they can win in the areas they have to against Alabama.

Wisconsin created an eye-popping number of explosive plays (13) behind strong QB play from Danny O’Neil. That came against a defense that has given up a ton over the past few seasons, and they simply won’t be able to lean on that explosiveness against the Tide. Then things like the two interceptions O’Neil threw over the weekend become more of a problem.
