It’s the Independence Bowl when Coastal Carolina meets Louisiana Tech in Shreveport, LA.

Coastal stumbled considerably to end the season, losing three straight while allowing back-to-back opponents to score 50+ points on them. Louisiana Tech had an opposite end to things, collecting back-to-back wins to end the season at 7-5.

My Coastal Carolina vs. Louisiana Tech predictions and college football picks for Tuesday, December 30 believe the total is too tall.

Coastal Carolina vs Louisiana Tech predictions for the Independence Bowl

Who will win the Independence Bowl?

The personnel uncertainties make this a little murky, but Louisiana Tech has more talent, so I’ll take them to win the game.

Coastal Carolina vs Louisiana Tech best bet: Under 51.5 (-110)

I like the Under here, with my projection of 49.5 giving me a few points of value.

Like it is so often in bowl games, this tilt is mostly about a lack of continuity. There are some other elements too, though.

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers offense has been pretty one-dimensional. Overall, it has one of the worst success rates in the country at 37%, but it’s been especially poor when throwing the ball.

Entering this game, that side of its offense ranks, at minimum, in the 100s in virtually every metric you can find. They’ve been solid running the ball, ranking 45th in EPA per rush, but that’s also conducive with the Under, as it keeps the clock rolling.

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs aren’t much better offensively, so asking this matchup to clear 51.5 requires either defensive breakdowns into explosives or either QB grossly outperforming what they've done all season.

That could be difficult for Louisiana Tech, with QB Trey Kukuk starting just his third game of the season after an injury to the Bulldogs’ starter, Blake Baker, caused a little bit of chaos under center. Kukuk has been mostly fine, but I’m still not sure he can play a mistake-free game.

Similarly, Coastal’s offense has questions. Both starting tackles are in the portal, their QB situation is uncertain (Tad Hudson may start), and the staff change screams inconsistent play, like we’ve already seen throughout bowl season.

Even if Coastal hits a couple of chunk runs, sustaining efficient drives behind a reshuffled line is a big ask. You’re basically betting that two compromised offenses don’t suddenly become explosive at the same time. Under 51.5 fits the most likely game shape.

Coastal Carolina vs Louisiana Tech same-game parlay

The Chants defense hasn’t been good this season but it’s done one thing well: reduce explosiveness. That will force a young QB to be patient and take what the defense gives him.

I’m not sure I trust him to do that consistently enough to cover this point spread, especially when you consider some of his questionable decision making.
